I have a 3 point post driver I use to drive wooden posts. I have been asked if I would rent the post driver to someone to drive 100-150 wooden posts. I have no idea what to charge for rent. Does any one have any experience renting these to give me a idea what to charge? Any rental price advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'd say 1-2 dollars per post.Call a couple of rental places.A 'hi-dollar' machine like that,I wouldn't let it out for any price.Been there too many times, the machine always cones back broke/damaged.....

yea, i agree with delta red. after you figure in your time and materials to get it working again. i'd tell him to go to rent a tool inc.

Working on equipment for a living, I see how many folks treat rented equipment. True there are folks that treat the machine like their own, but just as many, or more, that simply don't give a crap about it. That said, I can't give you a price for the rental, but I will go with Delta Red and say I wouldn't rent out something like that. Now IF you do rent it, insure you have an ironclad contract with the person stating who is responsible for repairs should it be damaged while in their use. Don't think just because it's a friend, and ya'll have never had a disagreement about anything, that things will be taken care of. PUT IT IN WRITING. I hate to say that, but I didn't do what I'm telling you, and loaned a "friend" two items. Now one is missing, and believed stolen, and the other is damaged beyond repair. Unless he decides to make things right, and I do have collateral of his to give him some incentive to do the right thing, but if he doesn't, I'm out nearly $1500 to replace my stuff because all we had was a 'handshake deal' for him to use the items.

If you do rent it, I would check in 2 or 3 times on how the neighbor is doing. It took me 30 years to learn this lesson. I do not hire out or rent any of my equipment unless I run it.

TJH72,I am with DeltaRed here,,, NO Way In H3LL would I rent My machine to him, to put on his tractor his operator! BUT................
In this part of Texas Professional Post Hole Drillers who have the Right kind of Post hole diggers to go through solid rock and the like.....
Charge $100/hr,(2hr/min, $200) Whether it is one hole or all he can punch in 2hrs. That Said........
You run your tractor, You Operate it, he has it marked/laid off, and go after it. $200 for the first 2 hrs and $100/hr after that. You know what type of soils Y'all have and a ruff estimate on how long it will take.
Tell Him that is the Deal, Take it Or leave it You running the machine lessens the chances of catastrophic breakdowns.
If he doesn't like it Tell him to go buy his own machine or find one to rent in town or get a local Fence builder to custom drive the post for him!! I will bet their rate is similar. Looks to me like a $500 Saturday project!
Hope this helps!

Is it remotely possible to break this thing? If so, you'd better make it worth your while because it's likely to come back broken.

Be careful in renting these things out, you need substantial liability insurance in case an accident happens.
2 years ago a friend of mine got killed when he was pounding posts with a rented pounder when the mast broke from the base and fell on him.

I can't answer your question, but I'll echo what the others say. Don't rent it out!
Damaged equipment and liability (not in that order) would be my concerns.

(quoted from post at 20:05:30 05/28/14) I have a 3 point post driver I use to drive wooden posts. I have been asked if I would rent the post driver to someone to drive 100-150 wooden posts. I borrowed a Shaver and used it for a few years. I'm not sure what can break on something like that, but I also was aware it wasn't MINE and I couldn't afford to replace it if I broke it. I did replace some of the rubber bumpers that were worn out. Putting in several hundred posts each year with it, I'd say a dollar to $1.50 a post is fair. But that's based on my area putting 4"-6", occasionally 10" cedar posts in heavy clay. If the guy wants to put in rail road ties in granite or steel posts in sand it might change.

If it's not someone you know well and trust, I'd get a contract and check my insurance. People are sue happy these days.

Like the others have said, if it was me I'd go with it. something breaks and he may not think it was his fault and your stuck with the repairs. also I'd charge by the hour if you go operate it for him.

I think the tone of advice has been pretty well established here, but I'll add my two cents anyway. Unless you use your tractor and you operate it, no deal. If you want to be a nice neighbor and do it for a pittance or for no charge, that's between you and him. But you operate the equipment and eliminate the possiblity of some "friend" ruining your life with a lawsuit or smashing your equipment and then sticking you with the repair bill.

everything I own, I consider an 'attachment' to me.
Borrow/rent whatever....you are renting ME, and I'll bring the machine....

Seriously though, consider when you are using YOUR stuff.
Even when using it properly, under certain conditions, you can see the strain is getting too high. Yours and your money, you back off.
Somebody else using it, they might not, and it ends up broken.

When you rent something you open up a big can of worms. If someone gets hurt, you get sued and will lose. When I rent something they make me sign a 3 page contract.I would drill the holes myself and just charge him.Your equipment won't come back tore up that way.I wouldn't do it for less than 100 bucks.

Thank you for all the advice. I took everyone's advice and told the person I was not interested in renting the post driver. Everyone have a good weekend. Thanks again.

Damaged equipment would be a small abount compared to liability. Just don't do anything for them but refer them to a pro rental yard who are well insured.
