Weeds In the Garden

I had a big bowl of lamb's quarter and a grilled chicken breast for supper. I couldn't tell the difference between the LQ and spinach. LQ is a lot easier to grow, brings up certain nutrients and has lots of vitamin C. I may just cultivate the LQ and forget the spinach. I just cut it off rather than pull. Maybe it will leaf out again.

Yes, lambs quarter is better than spinach. Swiss Chard is also better than spinach. Come to think of it, almost any green is better than spinach. Except kale, which, unfortunately, is not better than anything. Kale has become the darling of the sustainable agriculture crowd, because eating it is kind of like wearing a hair shirt.

Larry , poke weed is poisonous. It must be blanched at least 3 times to get the poison out. Never eat the roots. The berries are also toxic.

We have an east Indian lady that comes out to the farm and begs to harvest the lambs quarter...we also have lots of Purslane that our Mexican friend wants. Now if someone would just like Pigweed and witch grass....

One of the odd thinks about poke weed. It is indeed poisonous. However, if you get the leaves when they are young and boil through three changes of water it's edible. Yet birds eat the berries and deer browse the plant with no ill affects. What do they have in their system that we don't? Similar with May apples. The plant is poisonous but the ripe fruit is fine. Rhubarb--stalk edible, leaves poisonous. Nature is fascinating.

apparently I could be rich and didn't know it. I've got lambs quarter and red root pig weed over running the garden - send the buyers my way!

HAR! If I could find buyers for Pigweed, thistle and burdock I'd be rich! Fabulously wealthy! At least a thousandaire!

Are you talking about polk salad and Carolina horse nettle?

Like you said, if polk salad isn't cooked and cooked and cooked, it will make you wish you had never been born.

Horse nettle has a purple flower and produces a yellow fruit about the size of a marble. Its poisonous, too. I've never heard of anything that will eat it.

I had a neighbor introduce me to lambsquarter as an edible weed. It does taste like spinach and is a lot easier to grow. Never seem to utilize it though. Which is weird since I really like spinach. Just never seem to think about going after it.

My wife bought a 1930's cookbook at a yard sale; there were a lot of recipes in that book for using weeds to make a meal. Those were tough times.

Back in SE Ohio my German mother would send me out to get poke. I,d just pick the top 6 or 8 inch growing part. She would blanch it 3 times with boiling water. Then mixed the wilted poke with eggs and ritz crackers to make patties. Fried em in bacon grease. I could eat that every day....
