Cutting ash

This is my uncle loading the ash logs we cut today. We're going to build a couple new hayracks. Shortly after this we got a big thunder and lightening storm. A real gullywasher!

After the borer gets them they have a habit of breaking off about 15-20' up. Be careful cutting them. Nasty bug, ruined lots of our woods.

Go to northern Michigan and they're cutting down all the ash trees. Kind of amazing. Asian ash borers all over the place. One house I have had a dozen large healthy looking white ash trees last year. All dead now.

We haven't come across any bugs yet, but it will probably just be a matter of time. We've had good luck making wagons out of it. But we do paint them with old motor oil. Three of my wagons are 2o years old, I did have to replace the floors in those. With the bugs coming we'll probably be cutting a lot of ash firewood. If we wait for the beetles to get here we'll never keep ahead of them.

you got that right. Inspect trees before cutting them. The wood is really tough but constant swaying in wind fractures the trunks up high. I make a bevel notch on one side, then saw down at an angle to it from the other side...just like a normal tree. When it starts to heel over I run like he!! along a preselected route and try to get behind something. I have seen ash trees shatter into several pieces on the way down. If these hit any springy younger trees on the way down they can end up anywhere. Stay clear.
