Different Memorial Day observance

My little town has an annual observance that I usually attend. This year was different in that the towns two civil war cannon had been restored and were to be not only displayed but actually fired. I was extremely surprised to find that I was part of the program! I had helped on the project in what I thought was an insignificant way, but I was presented with a beautiful commemorative pen, made from a piece of one of the old wheels, and then asked to pull the lanyard to fire one. A very pleasant surprise.

Good Show!!

You gotta be careful about leaving those old cannons operational, though.

I heard a story several years ago where there was a Civil War era cannon in a park. Someone figured out the bore was the exact size of a cue ball. So they loaded it up and fired it. The cue ball cleared an Interstate Highway, went through the window of a high school, and embedded itself in a blackboard in a classroom. Luckily, school was not in session at the time.

Thanks for you help in restoring these treasured artifacts of our country's history, Showcrop. I'm sure you were thrilled when you pulled the lanyard. I certainly would have been.

About 40 years ago a friend (about 12 years younger) as part of a High School Project helped build and test fire a full scale reproduction of a Civil War cannon complete with gun carriage. They got all of the necessary permits and permissions and trailered it out to a Dry Lake bed near Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert. They loaded it up and fired an 8 pound Shot-put ball about 4 miles. They filmed everything on 8 mm ; Then hauled the cannon back where they filled the Breech with 100 pounds of molten Lead. When it cooled off, they cross drilled it horizontally & vertically about 6 inches back from the Muzzle and installed steel bars which were then welded to the Barrel. The Cannon now sits on permanent display in front of the High School.

It isn't being left operational. My friend who did the work on the breech mechanism said that a few key parts are being removed.
