Screen for overhead gas barrel

Thinking of putting a screen in line with the hose coming out of my 250 gallon overhead gravity feed gas barrel. Had a regular gas barrel filter on it but when the tank was half empty or lower the flow almost stopped when I was gassing a taller tractor that was approaching the height of the bottom of the barrel. A new clean filter element did not help so I removed the filter and ran without one. Well........the other day I gassed the 630 right after the tank truck filled the overhead tank, and last evening I spent two hours flushing the rust flakes out of the 630's gas tank. What's available out there for a simple inline screen I can put on that tank. I'm only interested in stopping the chunks that are big enough to plug the tractor gas tank outlet. I have a screen that's off a sprayer but it is plastic. Don't want plastic that might break. Jim

I wonder if you couldn't use the filter base adapter and make a
sediment bowl. Those are usually threaded in there. I envision
a down leg that is about two inches long and a quart mason jar
with brass mesh across the top. The hardest part would be
making a bail to fix the jar up on there tight enough to seal.
You could use a LONG U bolt across the housing that goes
through a piece of strapping across the bottom of the jar.

I'm not saying the EPA would love it, but they would likely have a fit if they watched any of the Pioneer fittings around here drip. I try not to fuel up for a couple of days after the truck leaves.

Rotate the tank 1/16 of a turn so the fitting the fuel comes out of is not letting all the junk in the bottom out.
You won't be able to access the last 10-15 gal but as you discovered you don't want that in your tractor anyways.

I knew I was skirting trouble with this setup, but I needed the tractor and it needed gas. Yesterday I thought DUH I should run the gas through a screened funnel until the tank settled. NOT Gonna happen again. Jim

One of these should work. Maybe use this as a pre
filter for your regular filter.

Could you extend the legs , get better drop for the
taller tractors?

Steve, I have that page in McMaster Carr saved. Thanks. Looks like the drain plug in the bottom of the screen body can be unscrewed to allow the chunks to flush out. Now all I need to do is brush up on my screen sizes. I'm thinking a screen with holes maybe half the size window screen. Longer legs is possible. I have made a stairway to a platform attached to the barrel stand so the gas man can climb the stairs and stand on the platform while he's filling the barrel. After I made the steps and platform the gas man came and took pictures of it. Jim

I have the front of my bulk tanks laying 1"-2" higher than the rear, the drain plug is in the rear bottom so i can drain off the junk every year or so..
I have had no filters on the the fill hoses for 15 years or more.

Thanks, Bill, that's the page I found too so it looks like I'm on the right track. I have no idea what screen size numbers mean, can someone fill me in on that? I have the tank tipped back too but the fill hole is in the back so the gas man really stirs it up when he fills it. Yes, I'm lazy and I don't drain it as often as I should. Jim

Nother thought. I haven't had bulk gas on the
farm for 5 years or better. The pump quit and I
just went to 5 gallon cans. Jerry ones mostly.
Most of my on farm gas usage is mowing and the
3020 loader.

I have about 40 gallons worth of cans and fill
them once every couple months depending on season.

Just a thought.

" I have no idea what screen size numbers mean,

The LARGER the mesh size number, the smaller the
openings in the screen. For your application
you'll want something between 100 & 200 mesh. That
should filter out everything down to fine sand
particles.

They make funnels with a fine mesh in the neck. I've also used a milk strainer into a funnel when I had some bad cans. Works fine and catches more than the mesh.

Here's the tank my gas man loves. Fuzzy pic but the evening light was fading away so the camera lens slowed down. I have it filled maybe 1 1/2 times a year so the steps seem like overkill, but that's the way I do things. Until I can get an inline strainer the funnel with a screen will be on the tractor every time. The funnel makes it kind of hard to tell when the tank is full, but it saves aggravation later. I have one of those funnels with the ears that lock the funnel into the fill hole of the tractor. Very handy. Thanks for the suggestions.

My tank with 12V pump has a spin-on plumbed in line. I know that you don't want to be buying filters every month but if you fill something right after again right after getting your delivery you next filter will probably last ten years. I have had mine for five years and haven't changed it yet.

Speaking of those LOCKON funnels with the screen in the
bottom, where could I get a little piece of screen to replace
the original one in my funnel? It looks like a very fine mesh,
water even beads up on it. It got a slight damage years ago
from forcing pesticide thru with the garden hose end. I would like to be able to use it for diesel again with the proper screen; I know it saved me once or twice with crud from the service station diesel pumps.

een using one on overhead tank for 20 years. Most are sold with a filter element, but the screen is what you want & is available.

farm I worked at had a sideways 'T' on the outlet with a drop pipe on their water tank and diesel tank.
(liked used on air pressure lines)
Opening a valve on the drop pipe before using the hose on the side of the 'T' would clear water and sediment.
farmer used to use the fuel from the drop pipe for parts cleaner, etc.
