1755 PTO Gasket

I took the PTO unit off my 1755, hopefully going back on tomorrow or Friday. I purchased a new gasket (for $11) even though the old one made it through the removal in decent shape.

How do I go about this? It could be a lot of work to take the old one off, should I leave the old one and use some silicon and save the new one for the next project back there? Or scrape that old one off - if I do that do use some silicon with the new one?

Thanks for any help.

I'd clean it off and use the new gasket. I don't like to get silicone in something like that. If any of it squeezes through the inside and falls off,do you want that in there?

I'm negative on silicone too. Have fournd too many pieces loose in the wrong places over the years.
For the old gasket, I pull off as much as I can(do not spend much time on it). Then I take a 4&1/2 inch angle grinder and put a twisted steel wire
cup(3 inch). Just run it slowly around the housing and it will quickly tear off the gasket.
No scraping or other aggravations. You will have a nice clean surface. Then, I like to use permatex #2 gasket sealer in a tube(about$3.00)
Just tab it around several places on the gasket.
Press on the housing a couple times and your all
set. Should take about 10 to 15 minutes.

I do like Cas, but I will add that I put the permatex usually on just one side. The side towards the surface that it will be easier to remove it from.
