3 out of 4 is bad.

I went to Menards and had 4 keys made using a Minute Key machine, self service device. 3 worked and one didn't. I asked Menards for a refund. They said you have to call an 800# to get a refund. I said that's B$. So I called Minute Key. Took about 10 minutes. They asked if there as anything else they can do. I said yes. allow Menards to give me a refund. They said they couldn't do that, I told them that's B$ and I will NEVER use Minute Key again.

I bought a portable roll - a - round Air conditioner while I waited for a new system to installed in my home last week. Just something to put in the bedroom to sleep at night. Open the box, & on top of the unit is a full size sheet of paper. It reads in huge letters... "If product does not work, DO NOT RETURN TO PLACE OF PURCHASE" Call 800 xxx xxxx. If You return an item that doesn't work; they put it into a system, & they can decide later not to buy anymore of the manufactures product. Most manufactures are scared to death of this. I made the decision if I plugged that $400 machine in, & it didn't work it was going straight back where I bought it!
Menards has a problem there, & it is going to cost a lot more money in the long run. If You needed 10 other items; then You would have bought the 10 from another hardware that makes good keys!

Did you actually pay Menards for the keys?

Lowes has the key machine I think you are talking about around here and it makes house keys only. You do not pay Lowes but rather pay the machine with a credit card.

So if I am correct how can you expect Menards to give you a refund if they collected nothing from you.

With your thinking you better stop using ATM's coke and candy machines. They all work on the same principal because the business where you used the machine does not own said machine. They are only renting the floor space for said machine to be placed there.

I bought it in a Menards store with a menards credit card. I thought it was connected with Menards, wrong. I recommend to everyone to stay away. I can go to a locksmith in town and for the same money $2 have a key made. No hassel.

Guess I'd never use a "do it yourself" machine in a store for anything, because they automatically have the "operator error" defense if it doesn't work. Take key to a store where the clerk makes the key- if it doesn't work, he tries again until it does.

I ignore their instructions and return it where I bought it. Lowes, HD, WalMart, Sam's,
Costco are very good about returns.

No Menards here so don't know how they are on returns. I do know some manufacturers that refused to sell their products to Menards and had some choice words to say about them.

You paid the machine in a Menards store with a Menards credit card.

And I buy stuff in Lowes with a Kroger credit card, Is Kroger responsible?

In Lowes to have a human make the key and guarantee it is $1.67. The key machine is $2. Support someones job or Pay more and support a machine?

My money will be credited to my menards card.

I just hope everyone who reads this will NEVER USE THE MINUTE KEY MACHINE, I won't.

It probably has little to do with the fears of the manufacturer. Places like Home Depot can price goods even lower if they don't have to deal with returns, warranties, etc. A machine like this key thing is gravy to a store like Menards - they give them space for the machine, then get a few cents for every key made without ever having to another thing.

Before they got Minute Key, Menards would make
keys in the mill work dept. Then they moved it to
the service counter. You are right, for Menards
it's gravey and no employees.

I wish Menards would go back to having people make
the keys. Just have to go to a locksmith in town
until they do.

I have to say, I do thousands of $ a year with
Menards, it close, good people, good service, free
delivery on large orders, until they put this
machine in their stores. This is the first time
they really Issed me off saying it's not their
problem. Live and learn.

Call them and tell them that. If they're a good company they'll want to hear that. May not bring back the key-making guy, but it might remind them you don't get something for nothing - everything has its cost...

That Minute Key machine is someone's "American Dream." They came up with an idea, worked hard, brought it to market, and made it a success.

You should not be complaining. You should stand at attention and salute. The American Dream is still alive!

Your really that upset over $2.00 that you are going to call and spend 10 minutes on the phone for a refund and then get on the computer and actually admit that you did it. Thats what I call tight!!!

My rant boils down to one thing BUYER BE WARE!!!

Tight, cheap, no just frugal.

I put original key on top of Minute key.
Discovered the blank was too long. Filed off end,
key words just fine.

Should I call minute key and tell them to keep my
$2?

I'm just amazed at how many of you think George should just shut up and eat the $2.00 loss.

That's 25% of his investment on that transaction and he lost it.

I know that if 25% of my seed corn didn't come up due to poor germination, I'd be screaming.

If it's all the same, I'd just as soon have none other than George as my financial adviser.

Thank you.

Now my 2 cents worth of advice is now worth $2, wow.

I was thinking of those who think $2 is nothing, I
give you my address and you can send me $2.

And the people making keys from US made blanks are not the American dream?
Is the American dream replacing workers with machines?

At Lowes the man made keys are cheaper than the machine made ones.
