Going to install a pitcher hand pump..on a shallow
well (18-20 feet deep)should i put a check valve
about 6 feet down or not? I live in nw ohio,so i
dont want it to freeze..also if i don"t use a check
valve....I"ll have to prime it every time i want to
use it. What do you guys think?

With a check valve anywhere, it will not drain back.
If you put a check valve 6 feet down with a very little hole in the pipe just above the valve, then it will drain back to that point and still work.

If the check valve is good, it should hold water right up to the top, so your pump will still freeze.

You do not need or want a check valve. That is what the bottom leather in the pump is for. If you loose the prime you need a new set of leathers for the pump.

If you live in NW Ohio (I'm in Central OH) no amount of covering it will keep it from freezing in the winter... especially after a winter like the last one. Don't use a check valve.
