Is there a sure fire way to tell whether it is a JIC fittings or a flare fittings? I usually just take the hose off or whatever I need to replace when I go to town. That way I can find the correct fitting by actually screwing them together.

If you work with them every day you will learn to tell. But I'm like you.I take the old part as a sample to be sure.

I use to have a little book that showed how to do identify different hydraulic fitting even gave measurements and showed all the different angles of the different flares

JIC bevel angle is 37 degrees; normally most common Flare is SAE which is 45 degrees.

As others have stated: Google JIC fittings .

If you don't do a lot of fittings, the take it with you is best. We have a GATES distributor that will give out a catalog that has pictures and descriptions of fittings, type, etc. Very good to figure out what you have.
I would think other brands have catalogs too.
