carb brass plugs

I am working on a JD B with a dltx 67 carb. The carb was rusted pretty bad, but I have had some luck disassembling it, and it has been soaking in carb cleaner for more than a week now. I still have not had any luck removing any of the brass plugs that are all over this thing. Any tricks? Would it help to heat? I thought that the brass would probably heat up faster than the cast and it wouldn't help, but I don't really know. Also, I cant get the screws out holding the throttle and choke plates on. Thanks for any help- Morgan

BEEN THERE DONE THAT

YES Heat is the answer. On those brass drill plugs if you heat them just until they start to give off that funny bright blue green color then let them cool they usually come right out no problem. No amount of soaking or boiling or carb cleaner till the cows come home will fix those clogged JD carb passages. You MUST remove the brass drill plugs then use long aircraft type No 40 and 53 bits to clean and bore the passages to their original size.

HEAT

John T has it right if you need brass plugs,Davenport Tractor has them for $7.00 for the set of seventeenth

They are correct about the heat, but I was told to always let Brass cool on its own and not try to "shock" it with cold water. Heat and then let it sit and hour or two before attempting to unscrew has always worked for me.

That's how I do it, I let them cool down BEFORE sticking a screwdriver in any soft brass, its bad enough when its cold let alone warm and soft when things can get bent or out of shape.
