Discussed purchasing a 1970 Ford 4000 tractor with a work collegue. He says Ford had problems with their transmissions in the 70's. Anyone out there know anything about this?

He probably is referring to the Select-O-Speed power-shift transmission. They did have trouble when they came out...in the late '50's. By the time that '70 was built, they were on the 3rd generation SOS. Nearly bullet-proof, if they got reasonable maintenance. Just make sure to try it out first, and get it fully warmed up - more apt to slip when warm, if it does.
Trouble with the 8-speed is almost unheard of.

As mentioned, the SOS tranny, more or less an automatic tranny for the tractors. It was an option on several models over the years.

They worked reasonably well, the trouble it they have 3x as many parts inside them, and when worn out cost - well you can guess, 3x as much to fix all the worn bits.

We have had a 4600 , 7610 and a 5000 ford and there are 20 or so in my little town . The 8 speeds are all still alive and well . I have never seen an SOS not cause problems unless it lived its whole life on light duty.

the sos automatic problems were in the early models in the 1950's... Anything after that was good. However.. the only problem is.. parts are hard to come by if they need any.. rare, but does occasionally happen.

If its the 8 speed, its a rock and best of the best...
