over under transmission on 8N

I am considering a 8N with a over under transmission for using a bush hog. I am wondering about the durability of the trans??

Yea it does.

An 8N will handle a 5 foot hog no problem without the over under.

Yes.

I have 51 and 52 8Ns, both with Sherman combination transmissions.

I use the 51 exclusively for mowing with a 5' rotary cutter. The Sherman is left in low/underdrive nearly all of the time. The increased torque available at the PTO allows me to mow very heavy cover that I likely could not mow otherwise, and the decreased ground speed aids maneuverability when working around obstacles.

Available from time to time on ebay. Pricey - $700 and up.

Sherman combination transmissions are not too difficult to find on ebay and elsewhere. The going rate for a good one is around $750.

Obviously, you must split the tractor to install it.

You will want to install a new input shaft seal before installation. You will also want to replace the clutch, release bearing and pilot bearing while the tracgtor is apart.
