I have a engine that was running. The next I went to start it the engine it was locked up.I have checked the starter and the timeing chain. what would lock up a engine tight?

Tell us more..!

What kind of engine..?

Are you sure it is not a hydro lock (fluid/fuel) in the cylinder..?

Pull the sparkplug and check by turning the crankshaft.!

Always possible the oil pump has failed or piston/rod broke..

Was the oil level satisfactory..?

Ron.

If it had a bad head gasket that leaked coolant into a cylinder that would do it. As Bushhog Papa said, pull spark plugs(or injectors)and crank engine over. Mark

I had a 98 olds that the alternator locked up on and essentially locked the engine till I pulled the serpintine belt.

As already said, What type engine? How many cylinders? How long had it been sitting? An engine can be running fine and if it sits for even a few weeks where there is much dampness, it can lock up due to rust in the cylinders. Remove the spark plug/plugs and pour a little ATF in the cylinders and see if it won't free up.

When you pull the plugs to check if the cylinders are full of gas, also pull the coil wire. When the gas shoots out of the head, the spark plug wire might ignite the gas as it runs down the block. Mine did.
