1943 JD Model B choke rod

Hi. My 1943 JD B came with out a choke rod. I found 2 on ebay, both claiming to fit a 43, but both looking very different. In addition, I can't for the life of me figure out how the rod would get past the gas tank in order to reach the top dash hole. Does anyone have any info on how this rod is installed, and what it should look like? Any pictures (or even drawings!) would be very appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Yes, flywheel start. If that's the case, what is the top hole on the left side of the dashboard for? Mine has 2 holes on the left side. The bottom one attaches to the fuel 3-way (mine has 2 tanks, gas and kerosene?). Thank you!

I had a 46 B, and it didn't have a hole on the top left. The ones I see when I google it don't have one either. Are you sure that someone didn't drill it in there?

I don't think it was drilled, because the metal
around the hole has a raised "ring" around it, like
it was formed that way. Now I wonder if I have an
incorrect dash. Thank you for this information,
this is a great lead on something that's been
driving me nuts!

This is what the one I had looked like:

WOW. I didn't realize this had such a big address.

Mystery solved - I have the wrong dash panel! I
found one on ebay, hopefully this one will work
with my gauges. Anyone need a couple of choke rods?
:)

no choke rod on a 43. You do the choke right at the carb while you're standing there breaking your back to start it.

On the dash panel you'll have two gauges - temp and oil pressure - a shutter knob, and a fuel tank selector

(all fuel - to switch between the gas tank and the "fuel" tank).

Fortunately, I have twin 23-year-old sons. I always snag one of them to start it, so I never break my back!

I have added a home made choke rod to my hand start '44 B just to allow running with the choke "on" a bit until it warms a bit in really cold weather. Purely a bolt on so it can be removed to satisfy the "correct police" if I ever want to. It's lots safer than reaching around the steering wheel and hood to reach the existing choke from the drivers seat.

Checked the John Deere Parts Catalog PC330 on page 46 for the carburetor.

Notice that the Choke Lever and Shaft (Key 48) is designed to accept a choke rod.

Checked on page 62 for the dash.

Notice that there is only one hole down in the lower left corner for the Fuel Control Rod.

Take a look at the photos below of the dash and carburetor on "John B" our 43B.

Hope this helps.
