My sweet Fido doesn't bite

Today's paper states dog bite claims reached a record high last year, to $483,000 million. CA had the highest number of attacks at 1,919. The US postal service safety manager says "Don't worry my dog doesn't bite" is a major myth. State Farm Insurance blames it on the increased popularity of aggressive dog breeds. I would bet my IRA that all of these aggressive dogs, prior to their first attack on someones little kid, had never bitten anyone. This is another reason why row crop type tractors are safer.

My thoughts exactly. It's always, "well he's never
even acted angry before, they must have done
something to him". But the kid is still without a
face, or worse.

animals will be animals.
dogs bite, cats scratch, horses kick, goats butt, humans punch.
'Never' is only the word we use until they/we do it for the first time.
Animal's people are the problem.
dumb owners that don't watch situations.
and totally dumb people that want to pet every 'doggie' they see.

Simple for me, I wouldn't let people walk up and put a hand on my grandson.
my dog neither.

If you have a big dog, make sure that you inform your insurance company about it. If it isn't declared, you may not have coverage if your dog does bite someone.

You take care of your dog - but would your dog do for you if you lost all your property because the dog bit someone? Somthing to think about.

I think on the local news they also said Cleveland Oh was 3rd on that list ?

We had this debate on here before. Those who have never been bitten or approached by a vicious dog or don't know anyone who has been will never ever think a dog can just snap and go nuts and tear into someone. They never will believe it.

Then there are those of us who have known people who were attacked and bitten mostly by the bad breeds because there is a difference in breeds !
We know better and hope you never have to find out first hand, but really wish you would then you would know what REALLY does happen.

They showed this video on the news this morning of a dog attacking a little boy on a bicycle, totally unprovoked. Good thing they had a mean cat,it could have turned out a lot uglier than it did.
Saved by a cat

I guess I'm not advocating either way, but I have been on both sides of the story. I've got two stories to relate. My dog has never bitten anyone, nor has she made an attempt or growled. (The neighbor kids actually ask if she can come out to play in the summer). She barely ever even barks, but that is because the breed was originally developed in the Bordeaux region of France as a silent tracking, hunting, and guard dog. Just to be clear, my dog is a Dogue De Bordeaux (AKA French Mastiff). She is nearly 6 years old, and I have had her since she was 10 weeks. I remember the first (and last) time that I brought her into a big name pet supply store, to have her nails ground and pick up some dog food. The younger gal behind the counter (probably about my age at the time), asked me what breed she was, I told her, and she told me that my dog was illegal in (X) city. I of course, did some research, and contacted the local PD. Nothing on record of her breed being illegal. I, of course, went back to said store (with my dog), and made sure to give them the correct information, along with the police departments contact information.

Another story involves an attack on a friend with another friends pit bull (unfortunately) a couple summers ago. This dog had been brought up in a ROUGH environment, and had been re-homed (which is where the friend who owned it comes in). I was on his patio, with his dog, and a female friend. The female friend, of course, was petting the dog on the head, while facing him. As girls do she leaned in to kiss the dog on the top of the head, and the dog snapped. Nearly took her bottom lip off and split her top lip clear in half before I could get my hands on the dog. Automatically (as fast as I could), I grabbed the dog and isolated it in another room. I rushed the young woman to the hospital, and thankfully after surgery, she has minimal scarring. This was not the first incident with the dog, and the dog was immediately euthanized.

I am personally a believer in how the animal is brought up. With that said, you should still keep in mind that an animal is just that - an ANIMAL. Just because they are X years old and have never bitten anyone doesn't mean they won't. Also keep in mind, humans have animal instincts too - and animals can read those. If you show fear, animals will take advantage and show dominance. Always expect the unexpected, and the only thing to fear is fear itself.

My daughter had a French Mastiff could have been a twin to yours, that dog was the friendliest dog you could imagine, you just had to keep a towel close by.

Yes, she is by far the best dog I have ever had (And I have had a LOT growing up). And as far as the drooling, she only is bad after she eats or drinks (or if you have a bowl of ice cream - she loves to lick the bowl).

I am pretty stuck on the breed, when she goes it will be a tough time, but I foresee getting another French Mastiff.

I actually brought her to a friend's bonfire last weekend and everyone asked me how I trained her so well.. My response was "I taught her to sit and shake.. She did the rest on her own." Actually, she is snoring away on the couch right next to me as I type.

(quoted from post at 05:12:51 05/15/14) yea, but, tractors kill folks, even though they haven't killed before.

Nope,Tractors don't kill folks any more then guns kill folks! Folks kill themselves or other folks.

It was a sad day when she had to have Shrek put down Shrek was 11 yrs. We had him over the house for dog sitting a number of times and I remember the snoring.
I had two blood hounds yrs ago one was over 120 lbs male we had company over for dinner once my wife cooked cornish game hens after dinner one bird was left my wife went to put it in the fridge and couldn't find it. Old Otis Wrinkle brow was just sitting there looking innocent but drooling all over, lifted up his lips and there was the bird in one piece.

It is definitely going to be a sad time when Roxy (my dog) goes. I am afraid of having to make the decision to put her down or let her go naturally when the time comes. Trouble is, I'd have a hard time carrying her if she went naturally (she is probably 120 lbs).

That story is a pretty good one. It's almost like he just wanted to know what it tasted like, but knew he would be in trouble. Maybe he figured he would keep it there so he knew it was "safe". Ha ha ha. Dogs do the darndest things.

That's what they said on TV ya,three different security cameras. Look at the time on the video. It overlaps in places.

Well i guess im different. i admitt my dog will
bite. and she better if she finds somebody messing
with my stuff cause if she dont i will..It not the
size of the dog its the size of the fight thats in
the dog. pound for pound i think the Chihuahua is
the meanest dog on the planet. Can you image that
amount of fight in a big dog, the thing would as
mean as Godzilla ....LOL

ditchwitch, never thought of it that way, but you're right. I'm just glad them little devils don't have longer teeth!

The family had security cameras that caught the incident.

Even though I am an animal lover, this dog earned his fate.

I've watched the video numerous times. The attack was completely unprovoked.

Ya and it had the kids leg too,not his pants. They interviewed his mother today and showed the stitches on his leg. It was ugly.

We have had a lot of white thug wannabees moving in our
town and walking around town like they own the place with
their stupid pitbulls. A few have had to hold their dogs
back when the walk by when our lap dog is out doing his
business. I warned our town marshal to be prepared to
deal with an irate person, because if one of those dogs gets
loose of the owner and comes in my yard or near my kids,
it will have .40cal vent holes installed before it leaves.

I had one dog for 14 years. Sweet old thing but I never trusted
him around anyone. He ended up biting my nephew. I put him
down. I couldn't bear the thought of it happening again or the
thought of some lawyer taking my farm due to the dog. I owed
it to him to do it myself and he rests under the elm trees. Any
dog the bites around here has to go. They need to bark like
they mean it, but they better not be mean.

I've seen the same thing for years. Used to be German Shepherds, then it was Dobermans, then Rottweilers, now it's Pit Bulls. Any of these breeds can be the most loving, gentle, loyal and child friendly animal in the world. Or they can be nightmares. I have seen many people who encourage aggressive behavior in their dogs. I've dealt with more than a couple back when I was still working. There are laws to cover people like this and their dogs. IMO they don't get used enough.

As I said in another post related to dogs, the US could kill off 90% of it's dogs and cats and we'd be better off for it. Too many people have too many dogs (I include my wife!) and cats and either can't/don't take care of them or release them to become pests/dangers to other people.
