I have a 9n that had an overdrive clutch on it when I bought it 3 years ago. The clutch is now just not powering the mower. It made a loud clunk before quiting. How do I fix it or do i just go buy a new one. Thanks

I suspect it is pressed together, and not able to be fixed. Good rule of thumb on that kind of stuff is to try to take it apart to see what's wrong- if there's no way to take it apart, time for a new one.

To help in finding one, it is actually called an "overrunning" clutch.

I always figured if I got it apart and couldn't get it back together it wasn't meant to be repaired

hard to say without seeing it - but I'm guessing there are cylindrical "dogs" - or whatever you want to call them - that are spring loaded -and ride against ramped teeth - so if it overruns - those little cylinders get pressed up by the ramps so the toothed plate will just spin.

... the little cylinders can get all sludged up over the years, and the springs aren't strong enough to keep the cylinders pressed out for the teeth to catch...

harder to explain than to fix.

If it's dead now, can't get any worse. Might as well take it apart and clean it out.

There may be different designs out there - I've only operated on old ones with the little cylinders.

I believe the 9n probably has a 1 1/8 pto shaft. The overrunning clutch you have may also adapt the pto to std 1 3/8. I think the clutch is available that way. The clutch I have is held on by a roll pin, inserted between the 2 grease zerks. You might check first to see if the roll pin just broke

Would need to find the manufaturer and see if there are parts for the broken one.

Often gonna be easier and quicker to buy a new one on a deal like that.

Take it off like the others suggest and see what you have, possible its something simple. Likely there are little dogs inside it that work like a socket set head and the dogs got wrecked. Might have taken the cogs with it.

Be sure to check that pto shaft size as mentioned, there are 2 sizes most all implements now are on the bigger size; your tractor left the factory with the smaller shaft.

Taking it apart could be frustrating due to clips that hold it together may not have means of gripping with spring clip pliers. Just keep at it with small screwdriver to get end of clip working out of groove. My "dogs" was a spring tensioned sliver of steel that broke, I went to local MF/Kabota dealer and got new one for $51.00 walkout.

OPPS! is right. This one isn't made to repair just to replace when wore out. Thanks to everyone out there for the help. I will order a new one from yt.
