anyone nervous

Anyone getting nervous about getting the crops planted in Mn or surrounding areas. Nothing at all has moved here. We picked most of our rock. Farmer up the road got his big 12 wheel JD stuck applying 100 acres of anhydrus. I am getting nervous watching the long range forecast. I"m looking at the 15 day forecast and don"t a see planting window let alone 70-80 degrees to dry things out. I bet we"ve gotten 8 inches of rain in the last couple weeks. Crazy year

We have been having the opposite here in Central IL. They keep calling for severe weather and rain and it sprinkles and does nothing. Planting is going full throttle here. another week and we will be done.

Hope things get better for you

About the same conditions here is w/c WI. I'm cutting back my corn acreage a bit - will leave one field in hay that was going to be rotated to corn, and another that was going to be corn for a 2nd year will go into oats or peas and triticale. No point in worrying too much...can't change the weather. Gonna be some l-o-n-g days once planting starts, though!

Travis,

Are you the Travis that billonthefarm has mentioned? Haven't heard from him for quite a while - we miss him, but I still like to hear from folks in Knox County.

That was the kind of spring that we had in ND in 1950. Finally got into the field on Memorial Day to start planting wheat - and the crop was real good that year.

Nope,..i gave up being a stubble jumper burying money trying to grow grains and losing that money instead already 20 years ago.
Strictly grazing and making hay ever since,..much easier on the blood pressure.

Worry about the stuff that needs to be worried about. Ignore the rest that you have no control over. Started farming in 1972, first day in the field was May 10. Last year was May 17. Some years early April. Just make sure your equipment is ready to roll when the fields are.

Yea its getting a little wet. That miserable unplanted area of mN last year is only 30 miles SE of me, it's not that bad yet but a similar pattern of just cool, wet, and overcast.

Trying to flush the water away

Here on the SD/MN border just about anyone going has been mudding things in. We are not as wet as southern MN but it really hasn't warmed up enough for the ground to be fit. Any corn that is planted will just lay there until it does warm up. It is aggravating to be standing still, but things will get better. I am spending my time fixing little things on machinery, fixing fence, and taking care of cattle. I hope things shape up for all of you who had so much rain the past couple weeks...

Regards,
Lon

After last year,I'll never be afraid of being late again. I had later seed corn ordered than I have had in years. I finally got about half a 15 acre field planted Memorial Day. Finished that up June 4th. Planted the rest of my picking corn June 7th and 8th. Planted my silage corn June 21,22 and 23.
Got plenty of time left this year. Been doing this WAY too many years to think there'll be a year that we don't get a crop of one kind or another.

An old farmer told me once that the best crop of soybeans he ever raised was on a field he replanted on July 4.

Think there are a lot of us caught in a bind with weather conditions this year. Just finished planting my oats/alfalfa Thursday, and fertilizing (broadcast) on oats Saturday. And it wasn"t pretty. Will be a awfully rough hayfield next year. Will probably try to cultipack it next spring soon as the frost goes out. Should have put the duals back on when I drilled - but in a hurry... Probably should have waited fo it to dry out a bunch more.

Not seeing a lot of tillage and planting going on yet. Cold spring and many rainy spells. If this ever breaks the corn, soys, and potatoes gonna fly into the ground!

Just made my freakin day Randy! It's raining buckets right now on some ground that is already sodden. Good thing is I had time to open it up and it drys faster now.

I haven't even touched any corn ground yet except to disc 15 acres of stalks that was getting kind of green. We've been getting deluged today too. I had water standing right on top of a hill across the road this morning.
Let'er lay there. I'll get it eventually. I'm not alone in this boat.

After last year I will never worry. Seems all those who took prevented planting last year after June 1 may have missed out on some of the best crop ever. Normally that May 1-10th time frame is considered prime in this area. Last year we planted corn from May 25th to June 10th. The best was planted on June 6th. averaged 275bu/ac Although wet and low test weight that was the dry yield. Decided from now on plant when the ground is ready not when the neighbors are out mudding it in.

Last year I was waiting for a tiling guy so planted about 15 acres of corn on June 4th. That corn yield was half at best so If I can't get the corn planted in May I am going to abort. Will plant all acres to beans. I know every season is different but I am not going to chance it. The Flying Belgian, Nicollet County Mn.

Ready to plant beans, but I'm waiting for some warmer weather. High temps this week in the low 60's won't warm the soil much. No use finding how long a soybean can lay in cold ground before it rots.

Travis,

I have a soft spot in my heart for that area. I spent several months back in '57 working on a farm over by Altona.

Way too wet, and supposed to get a little colder this week. Not too worried, it will get planted some day. I started some chisel plowing, got potash spread on my corn ground, and am spending time working on machinery, little things that need doing. Really don"t want to think about mowing the yard yet, but with all the rain it sure is growing. Today brought 2.25 inches of rain, and the past month to six weeks I would guess probably 6 inches.

Got done with corn Wednesday, a little uneasy about planting soybeans this cold with no warm weather in the near future. Of course with 2.5" of rain last night it's gonna be awhile. There is some corn up here but not a lot of beans planted.
