Indiana Diesel prices

My SIL is loading outside Cleveland OH this AM so was looking at fuel prices on the Pilot web site to tell him where to fuel.

I noticed the price for Indiana locations have a asterisk next to the diesel price indicating Tax Exempt Price.
I could understand if this was a separate price for reefer fuel or such but this looks like a tax exempt price for road fuel.

Can someone explain Indiana diesel prices and taxes on such to me.

Indiana charges sales tax on top of the posted pump price. If you are an Interstate Company, you can fill out a form and be exempt from that. There is also a 11 cents per gallon fuel surcharge if you are subject to IFTA regulation. With these hidden prices add ons, Indiana fuel is many times must higher than either IL or OH.

I was just a little ticked here in Michigan yesterday. Fuel has been $3.95 for a long time. I went in to pre pay like you have to do and the gal asked me if I was getting gas. I said no,diesel. She said "OK,I was just going to lower the price of gas". I said "How about diesel?". She turned to the other girl and asked her,she said no,just gas. So I went out and pumped it. When I left, the price of diesel on the electronic sign was $3.63. It was still $3.95 while I was pumping.

With a 32 cent per gallon change I think I would have gone in and raised a little he!!

Yes; Preacherman is correct on the tax status In Indiana. Most stations will accept your US DOT number for a tax exempt. A few I have seen will not. Also: it does not matter how much fuel you buy in In.; you are still subject to paying the "surtax" if filing fuel taxes.

I don't know about truck stops but at the regular gas stations the sales tax is already included in the price posted.

Randy, I threw a loud ruckus a few years ago in Perryville Missouri over that exact thing. The station manager finally agreed to let me pay the sign price, then whipped out a calculator to add tax to that price. I blew up again and he said pay me the sign price and get out. Then he tried to short me on the change. We nearly came to blows. Over less than $20 worth of gasoline. I'm generally peaceful, but I hate a crook.

"better off not fueling in Indiana if you can"

With 2 150 gallon tanks I think we can arrange that.

Thanks for the help guys. He should have made it just west of St Louis today. Unloads in Albuquerque and loads back in Las Cruces Tuesday headed back home for Thursday.

Diesel in Bristol 20 - 25 miles east of South Bend was $4.05 today, non-tax exempt. I noticed years ago at the rest stops on I-80 through Indiana, the prices posted along the interstate are tax exempt. I pulled in once with my pickup to fuel up, and my price was about 15 cents more per gallon. I needed fuel to get home, and calculated enough to do so, not much more. The prices that they show on the billboards along the highway, tax exempt, so buyer beware and fill up ahead of time. I learned my lesson. As a matter of fact, there are a couple of trucks stops near me that are not on the highway that operate the same way. What is posted on the billboards is for tax exempt, which you find out when you step up to the cashier.

my grandfather run a 18 wheeler and when i went with him he would never fuel in Indiana because of the tax and play with the fuel for enough weight to pass through the scale house

She intentionally lied to you. I would be ticked.
