Seeds in the ground

Well, today I hooked up the tiller to the Farmall H and tilled last year's watermelon patch. I then planted some peanuts in it. Got less than halfway done when the rain came, but at least I got some seeds in the ground.

I don't plan to harvest this field. The plow showed that it is mostly red clay-which explains why I didn't get any decent sized watermelons. After the peanuts mature, I plan to fence it off and run a few hogs in there. I figure they will find the peanuts, till the soil and perhaps add even more organic matter.

Then again, I might spend a few days shooting squirrels off of it until the plants come up.

Dan T- I like your idea!

Greg

MMMMmmmm squirrel gravy and 'cat head' biscuits. Don't get any better!!!

Do you use a 3ph PTO rotary tiller on your H? If so how does that work? Probably previously worked soil?

Dean, I have an after-market 3ph on my Farmall. When it came to live with me, the farm already had 2 Ford tractors plus 3 point plow, tiller and rotary mower already. I figured $400 for the 3ph was cheaper than looking for all new implements. Since then, I've added a post hole auger and a carryall that will fit either the Fords or the Farmall. and as soon as I can replace the PTO shaft, I have a sickle bar mower to add to the line-up.

The tiller is a King Cutter brand 5 foot tiller.

I had good luck making better ground by planting red clover one year . also i know of gardeners on small plots adding sand to the soil anythings better then red clay .

plus one on the clover.
Even if I'm just working on my yard,
with my clay, if disturbed, gets like concrete and nothing will grow.
Saw Nature do it naturally over time with wild white clover, so I started using it.
Get the clover started and after a summer or two, everything will grow there again.
