case 400 fluid change

What are the best products to use when changing the engine and transmission oil? How many times should I change the fluids before I start working the old girl?
My case 400 has sat for quite some time. Some of that time she was covered and some not. I"ve had to fix a rim and tire, and get the radiator re-cored (Ouch that hurt the buget). Now I"m ready to get her working again.
Thanks for any info.

On my 411 I change my oil in the motor every 250 hours, and as long as you don't pick up any moisture in the tranny, Let her eat for 5 years. I run a 30wt in the summer for the motor. I run 85-140 for the tranny. Napa had the best price on the trans fluid. Before I dropped the tranny fluid , I added 2 gallons of diesel to the tranny, and ran it around the yard for about 15 minutes. Sure loosened the sludge up. Make sure you have your 5 gallon buckets ready. Lots of head pressure there. Good Luck! Chuck

Here's what I did when I bought my 400 back to life. I rebuilt the engine so I have been using case brand sae 30 weight oil. If your engine has a lot of hours you could probably get by with a diesel rated 15W-40.

For the transmission I removed the covers to inspect the gears and removed as much sludge out of the bottom of it as I could. I filled it with diesel fuel and drug the tractor around the yard to slosh it around. Dumpped the diesel fuel and refilled with 85W-140 oil from the local tractor supply store.

For the hydraulic system I dumpped it and removed the filter. It is behindthe cover with 3 bolts on the lower right hand corner on the back of the tractor. The filter is cleanable but I chose to replace it. With the filter out you can clean out the bottom of the reservoir. I've been using a case rated hydraulic oil from the local tractor supply store in the hydraulic system. If the system is weak you can add a quart of 85W-140.

So far I've done a little plowing and mowing with mine and so far so good.

If you have more questions post on the Case and David Brown forum. There are a lot of good folks over there.

Good luck.

Eli
