4H John Deere B project

The kids are starting to turn a corner - they've taken pretty much everything apart that can be taken apart.

The differential is pretty much the only thing left. (this picture's a bit old). I almost feel like taking that apart just to say the tractor was COMPLETELY dissassembled, but - I think we're close enough.

Starting to sandblast parts and we even dragged the spray gun out and got some yellow on the front wheels.

The other wheels in the picture are for a side project - another jd manure spreader. (and any gray you see is surfacer over epoxy primer - and was ultimately covered with paint on the flip side (wheels were painted lying flat - flipped the next day to finish the other side).

Funny, It's been a long slow winter of grease and rust - once you see some shiny new paint, the project gets exciting again.

I would go ahead and take that rear axle housing off the main case to replace the gasket in that area it is a high potential leak area.

When I paint rims I stand them up on some bars c clamped to saw horses or something similar that way I can do the complete rim all at one time as it is easily rotated on the bars. Doesn't leave much of a mark on the edge and mounting the tires will mark them a little anyhow.

Mike, that is a good point about changing the gasket. That"s such a big solid looking part, I never gave much thought to the potential of leaking there.

Would be kind of silly at this point to not change that one out.

... which is the same logic that"s gotten us to this point of complete disassembly!

I really never wanted to go this deep. This STARTED as "let"s just get her running, power wash it, and slap some paint on it" type of project so we could use it for haying this year.

Broken rings, broken gears, missing gears, next thing you know it"s a ground up restoration.

Every time we remove one part, we "might as well" fix what"s under while we"re there.

Not so good on my wallet, but I know it"ll be a fantastic experience for the kids.

Jim I did reply to your last email - maybe it didn't go through.

I'll try again, and/or give you a call later.

Thanks!

I have found so many problems in these old tractors when you go looking. I just started taking them all 100 % apart and that way I knew what I had ! Sure helps a lot if you have some parts tractors but sometimes they all need the same part !
Really time consuming and yes it does get expensive. That's why I have not done any in years. No time and no money.
