I have a 1941 JD lA. not starting. I have spark and occasional pop but doesn"t want to start. I did see a large spark come out from around the generator to the block. not sure if or what is causing grounding. also wires may have been installed incorrectly. tried to find mag to spark plug diagram but no luck. I don"t want to try to start if they are in wrong position might cause more damage. any help will be greatly appreciated. thank you

Open the inspection hole on the magneto side of the motor next to the flywheel. Turn the flywheel until the DC mark appears in the opening. Remove cover from magneto and which ever contact the rotor is pointing to will go to the front spark plug which is number one.
