Folks:

Thanks to all who offered help and guidance about 12 days back. I share the sentiment/assessment of those who condemn our throw away society . Most of us love old tractors -- I guess I love old a.c. units because I elected to go with new compressor only . I think I"d rather risk failure in a year or two than buy into idea that HVAC units are supposed to have a life of 10-12 years. By the way , your collective advices were spot-on . The unit neither burned up nor , apparently ,did it make acid [ or much acid ]. I do appreciate the guidance.

Hello kajun,

Missed the original thread. Most central fan motor have multiple speed. One of the speed windings could be going bad. Take the heat cycle motor speed to another speed. Lower or higher, not the a/c speed, and see if that works. If it does, that would indicate a bad winding on that speed setting that is failing,

I thought about you when I went by an wholesale A/C supply yesterday. They were selling a 2 ton unit for $799. Don't know what brand.
