Tractor Parts Hauler Yamaha Golf Car

I just got a Yamaha Golf Car model G1-AM4, 1984, number 031-008769. It is 2 cycle gasoline with a 2-cycle oil injection system. Having problems with it picking up and starting. I thought it was idling, but by removing spark plug, I now think it is just using the starter. Will pick up and run strong, but very finickey. Seems to need choking. I took the sparkplug out, hooked up the wire, grounded it and turned starter. Spark is very small and kind of white colored. Should this spark be bright and snap like a regular auto spark?? Using new plug, and battery is completely charged up. Thanks for your help.

there's a pilotjet, or jet easily accessible on the top of the carb near the flange.

It's a screw. A long jet screw.
Pull it out and blow it out.

a squirt of air down the hole too.

It will pull away on the motor again

repeat as required

Some Dayz, I took out the jet and blew it out with brake cleaner, and then air, made sure the 3 holes on side were open and the one small one in the end of jet. Started right up and ran very good. Took a test drive for about 1/4 mile and just as I got back to property gate, it quit and would not start, even with choking. Back in shop, pulled the jet and it was clean as a pin - all 4 holes open. Seems it is not getting gas. What else can I try? Thanks.

It probably has a reed valve between the carb and the engine. They wear out, not seal and cause hard starting.

When it won't start, quickly pull the plug. See if it is bone dry, no fuel. Or wet, fuel something else.

GordoSD,
The plug is bone dry. I even choked it for like 30 seconds of continuous cranking, and the plug is dry and very clean (new plug) just light beige colored. Thanks.

follow the fuel line and see if it has a fuel pump. it will look like a small box, usually plastic, it will have one fuel line in, one out, and a vaccuum hose running to the engine crankcase. its pretty much a diaphragm that uses crankcase pulses to pump fuel.

Glenster,
By looking at Yamaha's parts manual on their website, I see it does have a fuel pump. The breakdown shows a diaphragm and gasket. Not sure about the vaccume line, but I will look at the manual again. How can I check the fuel pump?? Could I take off the exit line to the pump and install a longer line into a bucket?? Will it pump while cranking the engine? Thanks.
Tom

Yup it should pump while cranking. Disconnect the fuel line from the carb and crank the engine over some. It should pump fuel out. It doesnt produce much pressure, but you should get pulsed fuel coming out of the line. Check the vaccuum line for any cracks also.

This is gonna sound crazy. I have worked on alot of these they are great carts. It sounds like you have a blown crank seal hopefully on the clutch side. Jack it up and push the gas pedal and spray start fluid at seal behind clutch see if it tries to start. Also chk out buggiesunlimited.com for a great forum on these.

I have an EZ-GO about the same year model that had the same symptoms. Fuel pump was bad. Mine has the pump mounted on the engine but it still works on the pulse from the engine. Mine had a bad valve in the pump.

In addition to checking the fuel pump, also check compression. I have a 95 ParCar (formerly Harley Davidson)That after several years of use, got to where it wouldn't start. Finally talked to older golf cart shop guy that told me rings were probably worn so badly it would not draw fuel. sure enough, compression was low. New piston and jug for around $70 and i was back in business with more power than it had had in the years i had owned it.
