Tractor Suggestions

We just sold my dad's house so I'll be coming into some money in a couple of weeks. I'm thinking about another tractor with live PTO, 3 PH and hydraulics. I see why folks have multiple tractors; changing implements is a PIA and then change back. I'm not looking to spend a lot, maybe in the 3-5,000 range. I'm thinking about the Fords like Larry uses in Pa. I have a TO-30 now and looking for something about the same size, maybe a bit more HP. Appreciate any suggestions.

Larry

What about a Ford 5000, I do not know all the gory details of HP on it but should be plenty of weight and HP to do most anything on a small farm. Go to tractordata.com to see all info.

Any of the thousand series Fords would be good 3000, 4000 etc. Massey 135, 150, 165, 65, 175.I just bought a 175 for 3000. I'd get something with power steering and differential lock.

If you are thinking of fords, stay away from SOS. Get live PTO, round hyd pump. That meams 1955 or newer.

later 3000, 4000 Ford with dual range trans, and diff lock.
Remotes a plus

I too, also recommend the MF 135 or a little bigger. very nice machines but the good ones are always considerably more expensive here than the Fords.

as said, the Ford 5000 is a great machine too, but it is noticeably larger in tight quarters

I found this at an upcoming auction. MF 35. Doesn't have hydraulics but they are not a deal breaker. Any thoughts to price?

Parts and service, parts and service. If you're happy with the MF, and your dealer is close and pretty good, I'd sure stick with MF.

I would say a MF 35 or newer a MF 135 as any 3 point equipment now will worke with them. You go to those newer Fords that are in the blue line your equipment may not work as the 4000 or 5000 have catagorie 2 hitches and you now have a cat 1 hitch. Not sure about the 2000 on that but then it may only have a 4 speed and pto as you now have. 3000 could be either way. For older Fords you would have to look at a 660 or 661 model to get something a bit bigger and I mean bit bigger 32-37 horse compaired to your 29 that is in the 30, possibly a 2000 or 4000 in grey 4 cylinder series. Even with the 35 or blue 3000 you would need a different front shaft on a bush hog style mower than needed on the 30.

I agree with he choices others have told you on here. An MF 35,135,150,even 165 would suit you nicely. In the Fords I would go with a 3000 or 4000. Between the two brands I would pick MF. I'm not knocking the Fords at all they are a fine tractor, but it's hard to beat a Perkins diesel in the MF tractors. Those are some of the most fuel efficient diesel engines ever built. Another reason is if you bought a Ford you would have to get any parts you need from CNH and they are really proud of their parts. Really proud!!!

Per Nebraska tests. Your To 30 has 129 cu. in engine .Ford 600 and 700 series have 134 cu. in. Ford 800 and 900 series have 172 cu. in., so a sizable upgrade. All the 3 pt. implements would be compatible between Ford and Ferguson. Later, the Ford 600 became the 3000, the 800 became the 4000. I don't know the nos. produced but believe a lot more Fords were built than Fergusion, imply parts availability. This could be overridden by dealer location.

A Ford 3000 or it's younger sister the 3600 is just a great tractor.
Not hard to work on, good parts availability, and just downright bullet proof.
Get one with the diesel, 8 speed, LPTO, diff lock and power steering.
The 3 cylinder 4000 is an equally good machine but substantially larger in size.

The 600 became the 601 which became the early or 'Prior' 2000.
The 800/801/became the Prior 4000.
They both ended production in early 1965.
All had 4 cyl engines.
The 3000 was a whole new platform starting in 4/65. Was a 3 cylinder engine.
Goofy Ford also made a 3 cyl 2000 and 3 cyl 4000 which causes a lot of confusion

Row Crop has it right with the 550 Oliver, but to find a nice one with power steering and a remote valve might be a challenge.

My uncle went from an MF 35 to a Ford 3000. Nice tractor,he had it up until he passed away.

Like Leroy said, you'll want to stay with a category 1 hitch so you can use your existing implements. An MF 135 is a nice tractor with newer styling.

I have never had a bit of trouble with my Fords. You can get a lot of tractor for the money.

2000,3000,2600,3600, 2810, 4000, 4600, etc are all great tractors with parts availability. In either gas or diesel.

IF you can find a FORD 4000 / 4610 with a synchro-mesh trans...you"ll be much happier than just standard 8 speed / two sticks outta the tranny.

The synchro-mesh has two sticks...but under the steering wheel...gives you 4 reverses tat correspond with the 4 gears on the low side of box. Its just a simple back/forth on the H/L/R lever on the left side. PLUS...you don"t have the two sticks to climb around when getting on / off machine.

Happy tractor hunting!!

I really like my Fords Larry, and as others said, 3000/4000
with twin sticks fit the bill for what you're asking.
This one really had me thinking though! MF 245 $3000

(quoted from post at 06:00:38 04/27/14) Parts and service, parts and service. If you're happy with the MF, and your dealer is close and pretty good, I'd sure stick with MF.

My closest dealer is MF, 12 miles as opposed to 25. I will not buy anything supported by Agco, that dealer leaves EVERYTHING to be desired. And after contacting Agco about it was told they don't care about service after the sale, only that he sell new equipment. He does that by claiming that parts are NLA and that [b:ab2c02a264]you[/b:ab2c02a264] have to hunt the parts used but he can make you one heck of a deal on....so just having a dealer there isn't always good enough. Check out the dealers in the area by talking to other customers with older equipment. I'm currently looking at getting rid of my last piece of Agco supported equipment because of that dealer. Funny thing is I was about to look into buying a MF 60-70 HP tractor new when that dealership changed hands.

Yep sure are a great company to deal with. I have great parts support for my old IH and Ford stuff from any CaseIH dealer. Any tractor is no better than dealer support.

If yer looking at something the same physical size as the TO the Ford hundred series would be OK. If you want a loader do some research. Some did have power steering. Or the 2/3000's.

IH and JD made some decent utilities too although some of the older IH ones can be difficult to get parts for.

Rick

I agree a 3 or 4000 ford would be a fine tractor. But A massey would also be a good machine. The afore mentioned models would work well. But dont overlook the old reliable MF 65.Since you already own a Massey,Massey would be a good choice.

All the ones mentioned below are good choices. Me being a Deere person I would look at the 1020,1520 three cyclinders or the 2020-2030 four cyclinder tractors.Find a dealer with one for sale and drive it some.I think you would be impressed. We used to buy and sell and have owned lots of utilities of all brands.I just bought a 2030 off an estate with low hours that is in perfect original condition. The original paint is to nice to even touch up any.We are going to use it to plant our corn then maybe sell it.Do not buy a 2010 Deere or a Selecta speed Ford an IH B275 and a 414 are also ones to avoid.

if by doesn't have hydraulics you mean remotes? thats easy and cheap to fix.

http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/Massey-Ferguson-35_Hydraulic-Diverter-Valve_S60032.html

a few 3/8 hoses one or two valves and a couple pioneer style couplers.
I think sam40 still has pictures on the massey board.

Ford 4000 was mixed cat 1 & cat 2, switch out balls or use bushing. 5000 is cat 2. Any Ford 4 speed is non-live pto. Eight speed is probably independent pto while 6 speed is probably live pto by clutch pedal clevis pin adjustment. Six by four speeds were transmission pto.
