OT: Red Maples dangerous for cattle?

Son going to borrow tractor to pop some holes for a few red maples to plant along his pasture. Someone said the trees would be toxic to cattle. Other say no problem. Anyone have experience with this? Mid Michigan
 
Red maple,Silver maple and sugar maple wilted leaves are toxic to Horses and other livestock. Wild cherry leaves are also toxic after they have had a frost on them.
 
wild cherry leaves are toxic ANYTIME they are wilted. They have cyanide in them for a short time, til it breaks down into other compounds.
 
my Scottish Highland cattle ate the green leaves when I cut trees and also ate them on the ground in the Fall after they had shed the leaves. In times of extreme drought and when no grass was available, we cut the trees to use the leaves as forage.
 
I've run cattle where there were Maples of all sorts and never had a problem.Usually won't even eat the leaves when a tree blows over and no harm apparently if they do on the other hand cattle go wild over Hickory leaves.And as said wilted Cherry leaves will kill cattle.
 
D Beattie,you are correct,red Maple leaves can cause intestinal problems in horses and if they ingest enough Red Maple leaf it can kill them,cattle on the other hand not.
 
If you look up Red Maple it will tell you that that the wilted leaves are toxic to horses but also state it can have the same effect on other livestock. It goes on to say that the wilted leaves of Silver and Sugar Maples can also have the same effect.
 
My folk found out about the wilted wild cherry leaves the hard way. They lost two of their best Herford cows to wilted Wild Cherry leaves. Needless to say every Wild Cherry around the pasture fields were taken down.
 
Does that include Wild Cherry trees?

Just wondering cause we had several Wild Cherry around the farm and never lost a bovine to them that I know of.
