Trailer loading again

Oldest g'daughter volunteered me to drive a tractor selling rides to people at a county fair. She is in 4-H. Drove a Kubota L 5030, I think, which was a sweet little tractor, 4 wd, better power steering than on some cars. Automatic transmission. The lady who drove it before me hadn't driven a tractor before and the one who came after didn't either, but both did fine, slowly. Anyway, wife, daughter, and I were leaving to transfer something from our car to hers and we stopped by a Woodmizer sawmill demo. They were loading a fairly large stack on green lumber on a double axle trailer and stacking the lumber at the back of the trailer, not centered a little ahead of the axles. I told my daughter to look at the load so she would know how NOT to load a trailer and explained the problems that poor loading would cause. To be fair, the trailer was hitched to one in front of of it and both were hitched to a nice JD B, and maybe they were just going to move the lumber to the drive way to transfer it to a truck, but they still could have problems. They were still sawing and loading when I left.

On the same line, I saw a patrol car had a pick up truck with two empty trailers hitched in tandem on my trip to St Louis, guess that's illegal too.

if both empty.. he shoulda stacked one onthe other. see that all the time. in fact will see stacks of 4-5 at a time sometimes..

it wasn"t illegal when i pulled these three in east texas truck and trailers or wagons including tounge 100 feet and under with farm tags

Legally you CAN pull tandems, provided the front one is a fifth wheel. Can't be 2 bumper trailers in combo.

Well, it was a quick look at speed on my part, but it was 2 bumper pulls as far as I could tell.

Law may vary from state to state.

Don't think they were stackable. The rear one was a dual axle box trailer.

if one was an empty flatbed, and the other weighed less than the cargo capacity of the flatbed.. it sure beets paying the fine for doubles if they are not allowed in that area.. or the driver was not liscensed for them. ramps and planks usually work for stacking.

most of the trailer dealers here do this to move stock. you will see big frameworks of stacked trailers going down t he road.

Speaking of illegal and or dangerous. I am sure it didn't escape you having inexperienced tractor operators cutting their teeth pulling people around. That scares me to no end.

The problem here in Missouri, is the transporter of the trailers seem to think that DOT# on the doors do not apply to them.
I overheard the complaint at the truck stop one day, owner was mad as he-- ,because he had no numbers, way over the plates he was running, and no trailer brakes. (the money was close to a grand for the fines)I did not feel even a little bit sorry for him.

Far as I know 2 bumper pulls are legal here in Ohio. Could he have been speeding that he was pulled over for?

Few years back I asked local patrol and he said that the bumper pull camper with bumper pull utility trailer behind pickup would be legal as long as total length was not over 65ft.

It could be that 2 empty trailers in tandem going well over the speed limit is what caught the trooper's attention. As far as I know, Missouri allows tandem trailers as long as the truck plate is heavy enough and the entire rig is under the max length.

In many states, including Texas, it's OK to tow any two bumper trailers in tandem.

The rules vary, but sometimes they dictate the heavier trailer must be up front (common sense), or that both trailers must have brakes (again, common sense), and things like that.
