It was 61 years ago today I was drafted and sent to Ft Meade MD. I had just turned 20. My brother had joined the Air Force in June 1951 3 days after we graduated from high school.

I ended up at Ft Bragg NC with the 82nd Airborne Div. My wife joined me after attending jump school at Ft Benning GA. After I was discharged in 1955 I was rehired back at Aberdeen Proving Ground as returning vet. I had to resign when drafted and that law was changed by the time I was discharged. Our daughter was born at Ft Bragg in 1954 she will be 60 next month. Hal

I remember standing in the hall. Looking at my first Navy ID card. At great lakes 1968. Discharge date was Oct 1972. Sure seemed like a long way off.

That's where my Military M-1031 pick-up truck came from.. T'was the military's great idea moving it from Illinois National Guard by rail to Fort Meade.. They managed to only bash in both sides of the truck with lift trucks loading and unloading.... It only had 900 miles on it.. That's the don't give a shoot attitude some have.. Somehow, they missed the rear driveshaft.. Most of those are bent too..

I was drafted into the ARMY. Started basic training at Fort Lewis Washington around April 20, 1971. It was cold and rainy

thank you for doing your part in protecting our freedom. 61 years ago i still had a little over 7 yrs of waiting to be born.

I was to get drafted Jan 13, 1964. We had a big snow storm and the state highway snow plow got stuck and they walked up to our house and stayed the night. Well I didn't get out of that one, I got another notice to go Jan 30,1964. I still have both notices. I ended up at Ft Knox for my 2 years. VERY LUCKY.

I was Drafted 27 Jan 1971, I thought my life was over. I ended up doing almost 38 years active duty and reserves. Looking back at it
I won the lottery! The Army was fun. I met a lot of great people there that I still talk to or get together with them.

I felt the same way in 64, at the same place. When I did got out they had the nerve to see if I wanted to join the reserves. Stan

I always wondered what it would be like to be drafted. As a kid I was never big on authority, or being told what to do. I could never imagine being forced into that lifestyle.

Of course, it probably would have been the best thing for me!

I wonder, those of you who were drafted - what was that moment like when you got notified?

I would have been planning my trip to Canada.

Not that I'm anti-military, not at all - just, again, at that age - ask me to do something and I'd move the world for you, but TELL me to do something and it wasn't getting done.

Being forced into it would have really set me off.

Wondering if you guys were upset? - was it a surprise or were you pretty much expecting it? - were you p'd off? - just took it in stride? - scared? - just saw it as your duty?

If you wouldn't mind sharing.

I enlisted in Jan.65, joined the Air Force. My father advised me to join the AF before I got drafted. I think that his service in the Infantry during WWll influenced his advice. I volunteered for South East Asia and ended up in Viet Nam in 67-68. I went in willingly and am glad I did, that said, I wouldn't give a nickel to do it again but I wouldn't take a fortune for the experience.

I elisted. In my opinion the draft should not have been ended.Endeng it probably saved taxpayers a lot of money but thats all it saved. The good experiances to be had from serving outweigh 99.9% of the bad.

After my 1964 draft physical, I beat the draft- I enlisted Army Airborne. Volunteered Special Forces. Never felt so "special" that someone else should do my duty, like so many politicians.

My Dad was 82nd Airborn in 1951 or maybe 1952. Merlin Lee. Probably not a chance of knowing him, but you never know. He was from Central Ks.
