Boston Marathon

Just talked with somebody I know in the MEMA bunker (Massachusetts emergency management agency)

They're getting lots of reports of backbacks left unattended along the marathon route.

I don't know - maybe living in MA I'm a little sensitive to this, but...

What kind of )#(-#$#@ even BRINGS a backpack to the Boston Marathon after the backpack bombings last year?????

What could you POSSIBLY need with you to go watch the marathon that would require lugging it around in a bag?

I've been at the finish line many times myself, and not once was I ever sorry I didn't have a backpack with me.

moms/dads with young kids, I get that. But anybody else - ... ? what the heck do you need? extra socks?

Not that we should all be anti-backpack from now on, but - come on.

If you really NEED to bring one, at least DON'T LEAVE IT UNATTENDED.

... people ...

sorry - actually meant to post this on a completely different, non-tractor message board - forgot where I was.

Oh well...

I realize that was a big deal local story to you.

Been hearing about it every 2 hours or so for the past 2 weeks, and well, seems there are other stories that could get some coverage instead, something closer to me, or newer stories?

From way over here, it seems like it was a couple of nut cases that hurt a bunch of bystanders at a yearly event, and doesn't seem like there was any pattern or reason to think that would ever happen again, there was no targeting of certain types of people, just a random case of opportunity.

So, to me the backpacks just aren't a big deal because it won't be happening again?

So much other news, we have been hearing about that marathon and all for two weeks now every couple of hours.

Seems east coast is the home of any news; south east is the home of any weather; and west cost is the home of any entertainment.

The rest of the country doesn't count for anything, and never has any news, weather, or entertainment to ever hear about or discuss.....

As far as backpacks, well folks go to a athletic event for a few hours, you might want a drink, you might want a camera and a cam colder and a few batteries and lenses, you might want a jacket a windbreaker an umbrella. Maybe you stopped at a shop or two and got a few trinkets made in China to remember the day.

Where are you supposed to put that stuff?

Seems that is what they make backpacks for? Yea it is dumb to leave one unattended that is for sure.

This probably isn't the reply you expected, and don't mean to step on any toes. That was a big deal a year ago, and I feel bad for the families affected by it.

In the past 30 days we've had 4 teenagers wiped out in a car crash, 3 killed in another crash, one killed, one killed, two killed, and a relative of mine killed and hubby and 2 kids hurt in car crashes all within 50 miles of me. Not common to have so many deaths, and most all under 50 or teenagers, on the roads around here. The car of teenagers was from a town of 3000 people, everyone knew some or all of those kids.

To me that is a lot more meaningful, close, important story of today, than what happened back then over on the east coast.

And so, the news is what it is, not really new.

Again, feel bad for the families in your area affected by last years tradgety, I don't mean to make light of it, tho is seems such an isolated case it won't ever be repeated there again.

I don"t disagree with you on some level - I personally don"t care if somebody brings a backpack to the event, what I care about is that said person should know that many people DO.

So it bothers me that people do it - not caring that they"re going to cause grief (whether or not it"s warranted).

And it"s going to cause calls to law enforcement personnel who should be left to focus on better things.

People should KNOW this. You can argue all you want that people shouldn"t worry about backpacks - and I"m right there with you, they shouldn"t worry - but you know some WILL.

And this has been proven out by the number of calls coming in to the emergency response team about backpacks.

It"s kinda like the whole trench coat thing after - what was it columbine? one of those shootings. For a year after that everybody got all nervous if they saw a kid in a trench coat.

You can argue correctly that people shouldn"t worry - but you know they will - so why, on the one year anniversary at the site - would you take the "let people worry, they"re just being stupid" angle. I just don"t see why anybody would.

When I was stationed in Greece in the late 80's you were not allowed to leave any backpack, brief case, suit case or gym bag unattended. Had a bunch if idiots in the neighborhood that didn't like Americans and tended to try to blow us up. A year of my life spent making a country safe for Democracy that didn't want to be Democratic. But on the bright side the bread was good.

Hey! I know a guy - who is a "Conspiracy Theory" type - who SWEARS he has proof the Boston Marathon Bombing NEVER HAPPENED! It was all faked by the government.....

They are making all these runners out to be hero's. So they can run. Big deal. My dad and I put in more physical labor faming every day before noon, and did it day after day after day.

This whole running thing has me confused.

Give me money to run, and it goes to some duffas charity. I just dont understand.

So you made a big spectacle, made yourself a target, and got blown up. So go castrate the bomber. Shoot him between the eyes and maybe others will not follow his lead.

I certainly had my fill of all the news (?) stories about a repeat....but especially disgusting was the VP and others a few days ago, bragging how tough they are to go ahead with the race, etc. Like there"s gonna be a re-run of what happened last year? Braggadocio barf.

So were the kids of Bath Michigan that returned to school in the fall of 1928 heroes? I'm a former Air Force EOD officer (bomb squad) and I'm tired of hearing about the Boston Marathon bomb. I'm tired of hearing about the dirt bags they think did it. I also feel that until we get tough with terrorists they're going to continue to mess with us and our illustrious government will use it to take more of our rights away. Quit making the dirt bags that pull this crap heroes, don't give them publicity, if possible execute them, if not possible lock them up forever and throw the key away.
