tractor engine

Many things. Non maintenance, bad casting's from the factory, over speeding the engine, hit something with the pto driven implement. Without seeing the insides we are only to guess.

detonation -knock have been the end of many engines yet anything and everything else gets blamed.
detonation is caused by cheap low octane fuel, lean mixture, over advanced timing, sooted up combustion chambers from too rich a mixture and too cool of operation.
detonation causes peak combustion chamber pressures 2-3 times design pressure. This blows head gaskets , cracks castings, breaks rings, scores cylinder walls . The extra pressure will also flatten rod bearings or friction weld the rod to the crank. The rod breaks and punches a hole in the block. The extra pressure And thrust will also snap the crank.

What tractor/engine and how many hours on it?
How long since any overhaul?

I had a crank break in a 350 chevy once. two years after crank was ground .010 and all new bearings and rings. It broke on the rod journal that had .008-.009 wear, so I think all the knocking it did before the overhaul was a contribuiting factor.

it is a massey harris 50 cont z 134 it had a knock in it before and a bad oil pump i put in new rings, oil pump and had the head redone. not long after this the crank broke and sent piston and rod thru the block
