Got to thinking today with the deadly hog virus going around what will the county fairs do with the hog shows big farmer to the west of me lost 30 thousand head

How likely is it for someone with a couple of hogs for personal use to have problems with the vireu?

Has the virus been found in wild hogs?

I don't have any domestic hogs nor wild ones either, so far, just curious.

I know alot of the fairs are going to be terminal shows. You take your pig but when it leaves its straight to the butcher shop no taking them home to breed or anything.KEH, it could be a big problem for even the little guy. It apparently spreads very easy, although they say warmer weather will slow the spread. The pigs hit the hardest are the piglets, basically it sounds like if you get it and farrow any out before the sow is immune your piglets will die. I dont know the exact wieght cutoffs but your butcher hogs and sows will get it but they will pull through it in a couple weeks. A feed company did some research on it and out west they just swabbed the floors in truck stops and such and were finding the ped virus in there samples so kinda spooky if you have pigs where you can pick it up at. jstpa

PED is fatal to newborn pigs. Older pigs and hogs will get sick for a few days but recover. If you have a couple of backyard feeder pigs, chances are they either won't get it or they will be able to shake it off.

Word is, dirt pigs are less likely to get PED than are concrete pigs. However, I do have one pen (6 pigs around 100 lbs. each) that have/had some sort of diarrhea. I hit them with tetracycline and they're acting much more frisky now.

(quoted from post at 20:56:54 04/17/14) I know alot of the fairs are going to be terminal shows. You take your pig but when it leaves its straight to the butcher shop no taking them home to breed or anything.

Going to be that way around here is what I'm being told. I wonder if other animals can carry it back to the farm on their feet or fiiber or be carriers that don't get sick from it?

PED is TGE on steroids. The little pigs die from the scours within hours of contracting it. Older hogs have the stamina to live through the scours but the little ones don't. Like what jstpa said, it's on the floors of every business the hog producers frequent. The virus has been found on the floors of convenience stores in this area. The economic impact is huge. Not only is meat higher priced in the supermarket, but not as much corn, bean meal and other feed stocks is used, creating lower local prices for those commodities. Independent feed haulers don't have as much feed to haul so their income is down, hog hauler's miles are down. It just goes on down the chain. Jim
