had an abandoned 2008 chevy acadia towed in to our lot. keys were left in car and it did not start. finally tracked down a finance company and they just came in to repo it. the driver told me the finance companys can have the onboard gps disable the ignition so the car will no longer run and its easier to repo. hmmm....learned something new today. this one has onstar.

i have always thought that onstar has far more functions to it than we are aware of. 08 gmc had it and i never trusted what its capabilities where, now drive a 13 tacoma, not sure of its capabilities.

A friend's son bought a car that had that stuff in it. It was used, and he paid cash, so we pulled it all out as it was causing an intermittant no crank issue. They put the systems into cars with a high risk of repossession to make the job easier. It works over the cellular network to make the car not start and to know where it is.

One of the guys I know works on GM stuff and he did a little trim job. In the trunk of his Impala there is a little black box up between the rear speakers. Take the little box down and pop the cover off. Inside is a little squiggle of an antenna. He cut it and claims that NOW they can't find him! BIG brother is SOOOO out there now it ain't funny.

Certain finance companies do that a lot, especially the kind that specialize in predatory lending and weekly payments.

Don't worry about the car, if you carry around a CELL PHONE, Big Brother knows exactly where you are!

A few months ago here in Southern Illinois, one of those "buy here pay here" lots had a malfunction and every car that they had sold shut down. It was a computer glitch by an outside agency that handles the "turn off" feature if you miss a payment. They were up front about it and paid cab fees, gave rides, and whatever else they could do to help the afflicted.

A few year ago a business owners wife stopped at their store and run inside without shutting the car off. Come out a minute later and her car was gone. They call the local law enforcement and they head out find it and give chase till the car was wreaked. The car was new and had onstar.

Several years ago, when every other commercial on TV was GM advertising their OnStar features, it showed a genuine cop car behind a stolen GM vehicle that had OnStar in it. The audio showed the OnStar tech talking to the cops and the tech then said that he was going to shut down the vehicle. Sure enough, the video showed the stolen car slowing down and then pulling over to the side of the road. This one explains it fairly well: Go to YouTube and type in "GM OnStar High Speed Pursuit Preventive Technology".
Big Brother has enough of a presence in my life that I don't need them operating my accelerator or brake pedal.<br

(quoted from post at 14:48:19 04/16/14) Don't worry about the car, if you carry around a CELL PHONE, Big Brother knows exactly where you are!

That's not entirely true at this time. They can put me in range of a certain cell tower but not pinpoint me with my current phone. It's just old enough to not have the technology on it.

Europe is considering this type of technology be in all new cars... well wait and see...

It is true that OnStar can be used to track and disable stolen vehicles. If you have OnStar turned on, you can get an insurance discount for this reason. However, I don't think it's so simple as for the finance company to place a phone call to OnStar and they kill your vehicle. It has to be reported stolen. In fact, the process to initiate tracking is cumbersome enough that Detroit police were complaining it took too long; by the time OnStar would start looking for a carjacked vehicle it was often already stripped.
