Asphalt Sealer

Anyone have a favorite brand of asphalt sealer?

I'm going to have to finish a job that was started last fall, the contractor took my money and ran...
He used a water based sealer, put one coat on part of it, ran out of sealer, never came back. I think he watered down what he put on, some of it has already washed away. Can I just recoat over what's there? If not, what else can I do?

I want to finish the job myself. I see Home Depot has lots to chose from, priced from $18 to $40 for 5 gal pail. Anyone used any of these products?

Hi,I have used the asphalt sealer from Home Depot, paid around $25.00 for the 5 gal container. Appears to be good OR makes it looks nice for a couple of months. Cheers, Murray

Hello Steve@Advance,

Get the cheapest you an find, I do. Thin coats are better then 1 heavy one. I roll mine on. One thing is to buy containers of the same batch, or you will wind up with many shades. Look for the batch on the containers. Also you can mix cans together for a more even shade of color. Messy job! I use plastic bags over my shoes........ works for me!

I was trying to give this guy a break. He was trying to get a business started, him and his dad.

They did our church parking lot, finished it, but had some problems, think he put it on too thick.

I hired him to do my mom's driveway. His dads truck broke down, then they had a falling out. Hit me with a sad story of needing more money to buy the sealer.

Our pastor ran into his girlfriend, she said he left her and their baby for another woman... Guess he's out there running from his life.

Steve definitely better results for me , if I wait till the surface is hot, or warmer weather. I am like the other guy, haven,t found much difference in brands. I just buy the cheap and do it about ever other year. Have tried , mops, squeegee , and rollers, just one of those jobs that is not easy at all. Hired a guy that SPRAYED it on one time, that was a joke did look good for about two months then went away.

I've used the good stuff and the cheap stuff. It doesn't seem to make a difference. No matter what I use I still have to do it every two years.
I use about 11 5gallon pails and I shop around. Last time it was Maynard's, two years before that it was Ace Hdw. then Home Depot before that. I get it all at once from the same place each time so it will look the same.

Been getting mine at Rural King, can't remember the brand, but it seems to last about three years. Key to the whole thing is to get it mixed good. Buy one of those mixer attachment for an electric drill, saves a whole lot of work and does a good job, lots better than hand mixing. I use a 3' brush to spread it.

i seal driveways as a sidelne, have since the 1980's dont know how big your drive is, but if its substancial find place like sealmasters and buy a 55 gallon drum it will make 100 to 110 gallons of sealer at a cost quite a bit less than buying that much in 5 gal pails. for the already covered area figure roughly 2 /10s to 3 / 10/s gallon per sq yard of driveway for the unsealed areas it varries depending on how rough your asphalt is but it can hit a gallon per sq yard if its real course stuff , get help to unload the barrel it will weigh around 600 lbs, you can get the water soluable like was used before or you can buy the acrilic type, its 3 times the cost, and 3 times the product

The only way to take your money and run is by paying him up front. Your mistake, not his.
