What have some of you guys that suffer with back problems done? Sell the hand crank tractors and stick with electric start. I am 50 yrs old and diagnosed with two ruptured disc.

Don't know,.. never had no use for hand crankers,.all i got is electric start tractors.
64 years old and no back problems

I have seen some interesting devices to put on a hand cranker to make it electric start. Several years ago there was a couple ideas for adding to F series Farmalls

LOL, reminds me of my younger years, we ha an A and B John Deere that were both hand crank, no problem... Then my Dad bought an old F-20 with a mounted picker on it. The only way I could start that thing was break it to lead. Even after we junked the picker.

What are the tractors?

If your back is bad and you use your tractors much, you may be ahead to get a tractor with a good seat and a good seat suspension. Electric start, easier mounting, power steering and good brakes are side benefits that will also come with newer tractors.

Because I grew up on farm and had to hand start John
Deeres, I'll never buy a hand start tractor or a
tractor without hydraulics.

Herniated or ruptured? If you have ruptured disks it's time to get them fixed now. I'm sure your doc has given you his opinion. Either way I feel for you. Jim

Have your back fixed. That's about more than tractors.
Then you can get your tractors fixed.
A magneto fired tractor starts easily when tuned well.
I have 3 or 4 left and they all fire up just rolling them over off impulse.
Sometimes they start so quickly they will scare you.
If you have to crank them round and round or try to spin them
hard then they need a little ignition (or other) help.

How often are you using them? If it is a Sunday drive thing I would just belt them up to start them. There are belt attachments for lots of later tractors that have electric starters you could use as your starting tractor. I'm thinking of the right angle ones for 8N fords.

Get your back fixed and get electric start. It is best to back off a little on the activities and live without pain.

A ruptured disk is nothing to mess with. Does your doctor want to fix it or fuse?

Having been there and done that, I thought "herniated" and "ruptured" were synonymous.

Dr does not recommend surgery right now.Had to put a new washing machine in yesterday and now I am flat on my back today. Thank goodness for pain meds

Get your back fixed and then worry about the tractors.

I had surgery on my back for a herniated disc in 1968 when I was 34. It's amazing how many tricks I've picked up and devised over the years to protect my back.

One thing I will NOT do is lift something heavy with someone else. I'm always afraid they'll screw up and throw the whole load onto me. If I need to move something, my wife will want to help. I'll tell her, "Just let me putter around myself. I'll get it done". I'm not sure I could live without my H Farmall with the loader on it.

I had many bad discs. First time I had a surgery where they "trimmed" them with a knife. After 3 months I was back as work. First time I pulled on a big wrench - they "herniated" again. This time worse then ever. The bad ones in my neck ruptured to the extent they squashed the nerve roots going to my left arms.
Finally went back in for more surgery after I could hardly use either arm. Got them both fused with slivers of my hip bone. That was in 1992. Been pulling hard on wrenches ever since. If you view the problem as a mechanic - it's pretty clear. A disk is like a small rubber shock absorber between each vertebrae. If it squashes, breaks, and pieces hang out - cutting out the damage means you have less disk then before. That means it can only handle less abuse - not more. If you weigh more now then when younger (more load) and want to pull on cranks or wrenches - I see no fix other then a fusion. If you choose to change your life style - then you might get by "as is" or with a "surgical trim." I had this exact discussion with my surgeon before my first surgery. He treated me like I was an idiot with greasy hands who knew nothing about surgery or medicine. After his surgery failed quickly - it showed I wasn't so wrong after all.

Sometimes you have to adjust yer life a bit. Just the way it is.
Convert what tractors you can, trade the others for an electric start model.
I switched from drag cars to tractors years ago so I didn't have to lean over a fender all day. Back is happier.
I have been slowly trading off all my pull rope stuff, keeping the electric start ones. because it seems I always hurt my neck with those dang pull rope models.
