I would like to know who made the 1st salable 4 wheel drive tractor? And what year was it available to purchase?

IH ?
Ford ?
Deere ?
Allis ?
Empire ? (based off the Willys Jeep)

If you know please clue me in cause I have been wondering about this.

Steiger brothers made the first articulated 4WD tractor in a converted dairy barn on their farm near Thief River Falls, MN. Very inventive guys. I freelanced in those days and wrote the first article about them that appeared in a farm magazine.

I don't know about worldwide but in North America I believe it was Massey Harris. Not a high volume produced but were sold commercially as opposed to a limited research-demonstrator-type production.

The Empire was only 2 wheel drive,Yes it had engine, transmision, and transfercase from jeep but only used transfer case for hi lo range

All wheel drive, but only 3 wheels.

I always thought MM had the first, I could be wrong, they had a stuggart special I believe and it was two U models hooked together, and I thought the a4t was the first articulating 4wd, think that's what the article I have says I'm gonna have to double check.

Hi Dick,
Matbro in England produced quite a few articulated loading shovels in the 1950's, they also produced a few articulated agricultural tractors based on Ford parts in 1962 known as The Matbro Mastiff. They only built about 20 so they have become much sought after as a collectors item.
