300 farmall restoration...

Hi,
We are restoring a farmall 300 and have a couple of questions. What gauge wiring should we use for lighting circuits? It is a 6 volt system.
Also, what color is the dash plate supposed to be?
And, how does anyone know what the original colors were when these tractors were built?

First, there is an IH forum and you will get good help there...I highly recommend it, but a few of the folks on there are also on here. Second, if you are restoring the tractor you should look into a commercially made wire harness. Well worth the investment. One of the first things I do on a tractor is strip out all the spaghetti replacement wires that have been used in former restorations and put in a good harness with proper sized and rated wire. IMHO, the way to go.

not sure on the dash plate color - but for wiring, I'd contact Brillman.

They carry full harnesses, made very much like the originals with cloth covered wired...

Not sure if the 300's are old enough for cloth wire - but- either way, they'll have a full harness cut to length, and their pricing is usually good enough to not bother making it yourself.

Buy the harness. There is a good outfit in central IL that makes good harnesses. I think they were right off of I39.

The dash was gray.

It is plastic coat wire with a cloth "loom" over it to hold the wires together. Changed out a couple of them. That is on a 300U.

12gauge wire. The color of the dash is a medium dark grey. above the forums on YT there are two grey strips for tractor manuals and tractor parts. The darker grey in those (of the two greys) if close. Jim

Thanks for all the responses. Most of the wiring harness has already been replaced on this 300. We only need to do the side mounted lights, and the rear light and disconnect hook up. I really don't see the need to buy harness for that when most of the wire is hidden anyway. If 12 gauge wire is sufficient, that's what we'll use.
And, the color suggestions are great also. Thanks!
