Farmall M Distributer problems

My M started running real rough at the end of last
season. I thought that it was a problem with the
carburetor, I pulled it and cleaned it out put it
back on, no problem. I pulled off the distributor
cap and there was metallic filings in it where the
roater has been hitting. I am thinking the thing
is just plumb wore out. I have seen where you can
get like new shafts for the distributor online and
was wondering if i can get by with just replacing
this or do i need to get a whole new distributor?

There is a bushing in the base of the distributor (under the centrifugal advance)
To replace it requires the disassembly of the distributor from the gear, to the rotor.
Be careful with the pin through the gear, it can be tough to punch out. If the shaft is worn more than one thousandths, it will need to be replaced, or built up and reground to size.
New bushings have been available from IH, or a new one can be machined. The shaft play should be less than .001" Jim

I just had one of these torn apart. As you turn the engine over slowly use a feeler gauge to measure the points clearance each time they open. If you get different readings the shaft may be bent or the bushing is shot. There is a plug on the side of the distributor for installing a grease fitting to lubricate the shaft. Most don't have the grease fitting installed. Let me know what you find.

redneck repair to get you by: file the contact point on the rotor a bit shorter. It MAY improve the running for a while. biggest thing is to keep the rotor from hitting the cap contacts.Btw,put a bit of oil/grease on the distributor bushing. DeltaRedneck??? :p

If the shaft and bushing are worn to the point that the rotor is hitting the inside of the cap, it's amazing it would run at all!

Repairing it would be more difficult than replacing it. Think I'd look into Kent's offer.
