old crawler tractors

How well did the old tractor crawlers work! Thinking about getting one to mow some really soft ground! It was pasture at one time would like to turn it back into pasture! Any sugestions on what to get?

Crawler are also heavy. How soft? You might want dual tires front and back, or some turf tires. maybe a team of horses.

would just chase the cows in.

different crawlers had different ground contact pressure--the width of the pads made most of the difference--there are even LGP machines with very wide pads.

Crawlers are a really high maintenance machine due to track wear.
I once mowed some pretty soft ground with a JD model 50 that had 15.5-38 rear tires and the mower on the 3 pt. so the front end was light and didn't sink either. Those oversize tires worked pretty good for that. Couldn't pull anything though. I tried to pull a stuck pick up out that wasn't too stuck and barely did it as I could not get a bite it just floated on top.
If you could find a tractor with rubber tires and the ARPS tracks that go over them they did well in mud.

How often do you need to mow it? If you just want to mow it once to get the brush down, could you do it when its frozen?

The old crawlers can be a real workout to operate as to the steering and brakes. You said old, so if you need a small, light machine, a PTO and three point hitch may be a problem. If you have a smaller area, and a self powered pull behind mower, then just about anything you like would work.

As others have said, crawlers require some care to keep operating well, and a little knowledge of how to operate them, especially down hill with some weight behind them.

Keep the tracks taken care of. They are heavy and awkward to handle, especially if you throw one in the field.

Something like an Oliver HG, OC3,or OC4 is a nice small and light machine for farm work like pulling a mower. Easy to work on, no steering clutches to worry about (except some OC4s), etc. HGs and OC3s were designed for farm work more then pushing dirt. Finding a good one at a decent price though is difficult. Case 310 crawler is more modern, uses the same transmission with no steering clutches and is also a nice light machine.

Horses are afraid of soft ground. Mules are what you need for soft ground. You can put some large round pads on their hooves.

If it's really wet, hogs might like it and they would tear out most of the vegitation too.

Sorry guy, but SOME horse and SOME mules are afraid of soft ground. Others aren't. A mules foot is generally much smaller than a horses of the same general size. The horses bred for working the soft lands in Europe tended to have big hooves and they were trimmed to maintain size. You put a mud plate on some animals and you'll have a rodeo the likes you've never seen before. That goes for mules too.

If it's real soft, meaning WET, then you probably aren't going to get any decent grazing off it. Your best bet is going to be using the crawler to establish some drains. You can mow with some crawlers, but you aren't going to make good hay with one in a swamp. If you're just trying to get rid of brush in a wet area, bush hog it in winter.

I've got lots of boggy land. Even in a dry summer the stock won't eat what grows there. It needs draining and lime.
