OT wifies car

I changed the air filter on my wifes 06 passat yesterday. This morning when she started it it idled lousy. I did drop the air box, cpould that have brokern the MAS flow sensor?

Rule out the easy/cheap things first.

Check engine light? If so can you get the code(s) read?

Is there a separate intake air temp sensor that could have gotten unplugged or damaged or perhaps the MAF is not plugged in tightly or the connector got damaged?

Or something didn't go together/seal up properly, causing an air leak that bypasses the sensor. Some engines have a vent hose to the valve cover that plugs into the intake hose,

Take a close look into the MAF and see if a stray insect or other piece of debris from the filter or airbox could have lodged in there, messing up flow past the sensing wires, causing false readings to the 'puter.

I have seen that 2 or three times.

I don't think VW doesn't like my code cheap code reader. I get 01/03 02/03 03/03. I checked under the box (which covers the top of the engine), no connections off and no other hoses on the box. Just has an inlet and outlet with the MAF in it. I'll pull the MAF out and take a look at it when it stops raining.

I was just wondering if they're sensitive to shock.

Most MAF sensors are hot wire sensors, so it is very possible that it is susceptible to shock. Also check carefully to see that it is plugged in fully/correctly, and that there is no unmetered air entering the system. On today's systems, unmetered air can have a big effect on idling and running characteristics.

I'm just going to throw this out. Check and make sure the oil dipstick is snug in the tube. Got something to do with the sealed lubrication system. It happened with our Toyota.

VW and Audi MAFs can be trouble. If dropped, it might have been damaged. I kept spares for my 2003 VW TDI and my wife's 2001 Audi TT in the trunk, along with a coil pac for the Audi.

You really need the VW/Audi code reader to get inside these cars brains and get the real codes, not the US/EPA mandated codes. I used VAGCom, which I think goes by another name now.
