Bent push rod

I have a Farmall 504 diesel....I recently changed the fuel injection pump got it running and the she started missing and I removed the vavle cover and #2 cylinder had a bent push rod. What would cause this to happen?? Thanks Vince

A stuck valve from no lube in it for a long time. If the valve on that rocker is free, I would put a spray of penetrant on it. The pushrod night be able to be straightened on a nice hardwood block! Jim

I've straightened them more than once ! Never could figure exactly what caused them . My guess was the relief hole in the lifter (hyd) plugged momentarily from sludge.

Check for a broken valve spring, and then check the valve clearance adjustment. If it is too wide, the rocker arm might jump off the push rod. I had that happen on a 9000 Ford diesel. A bent and straightened push rod is never as strong as one that has never been bent, and may be a problem later.

Other than causes already mentioned, didn't give it a taste of ether did you. Those glow plug engines do bend push rods when some one tries that.

Bob , I was relaying MY experience with bent pushrods in a Ford 360 truck engine. That's why I put the HYD in parentheses , to indicate I was speaking of a different situation .....Clear enough now ?

Dalex, you made NO mention of a Ford 390 in your post, and I don't see one elsewhere in this thread.

You posted a comment about hydraulic valve lifters in a thread about a machine that does not use them. I posted a simple clarification, and there's no need to be offended or snippy.

Sometime down the road someone with similar problems will find this post in the archives and will benefit from not having to try to chase down a bad hydraulic lifter as the cause of his classic IH tractor bending a pushrod.

I remember 20 some years ago neighbor having issues with his 1066 bending pushrods. Ended up being years of wear in the throttle linkage causing it to overrev and bend push rods.
