Haying Tractor ????

I am looking for suggestions on choosing a good multi purpose tractor primarily for cutting & baling hay. I have an 8N & a Allis WD but would like something with a little more horsepower & a bit more modern. I would be baling 5 acres, maybe more, & possibly using for plowing, planting & harvesting 5 to 10 acres of corn or oats eventually. Something that would support a loader & have a 3 point for implements. I can only spend around $5000.00 or so max. So in general, an all purpose tractor but an upgrade from the 8N-WD-WD 45 types. A good hobby farm tractor.

Thanks For Any Help

Oliver 770. Might even move up to a 1550-1555. I saw a nice 1555 gas sell on an auction yesterday for $4300. That price seems about right for one.

I moved up from a Farmall H to a Farmall 300 with a fast hitch and
like it a lot. It is handy with 3 point implements and has live
hydraulics, IPTO and 10 forward speeds with the TA. They can be
had for under $2000 around here from time to time, I got mine for
$1k but it needed a lot of work to get it running and operating.

What dealers are near you? CaseIH , John Deere , Agco , New Holland ? Parts for older tractors can be a pain , so a dealer near by can be a good thing. That is till they close down. I think MF 165 Or IH 766/866 or786/866 Or Alis 180 JD 2120 all could be good tractors for you. Ford 5610 6610 7710/5640 6640 7740 also could be a good fit . Large round bales, or small square?

My brother used an Alis WD to do 200 acres of hay from 1950 until he died last year. If you want to up grade, you should be able to buy a Ford 5000 for less than $5000

JD B. You can get three and fix them up good for $5,000 and at least one should make it to the end of the season

For only 5 acres? The WD you already own will easily handle that if you pick the proper square baler.

Will be hard to make any money as it is on baling only 5 acres. Will be impossible if you spend even more money on another $5k tractor.

Rake and tedd with the 8N.

Bale and cut with the WD since it has a slower 1st gear and a pseudo live pto via the hand clutch.

I agree with the others. That WD will be hard to
beat, especially for 5 acres.Just clean it up and
give it some TLC. No need to spend lots of money
when you already have one of the best (older)
baleing tractors out there!

Yesterday I bought a very sharp well cared for Deere 3020 gas narrow front, good rubber and perfect sheet metal for $3700 at a local sale.It did not have three point arms but did have the rockshaft so they can be added.I also bought a 3700 hour 2030 Deere gas that has all original paint and it perfect that I plan to sell and am going to ask$5700 for it.Both would be great hay tractors.

You should be fine with the tractors you have, if you have impliments for them. My neighbor has a set of plows for a WD for sale. A pull type disc and planter should work for corn. You could buy a grain drill to plant the oats, but I use a seeder and disc to cover the seed. I have a Farmall C, a Farmall Cub and a Case SC and can handle all that you mentioned above.

What you have should work for 5 acres but neither are what you would call a good loader tractor. He, in MN, in the "Heart of the Lakes" smaller 40-120 HP tractors from the 50's and 60's are real reasonable and many can be had for under 5K. You match your tractor to your implements. I have a round baler that requires 70HP. I'd be looking at something like a 656, 560 or 460 IH. JD 3020. Case 30 or 70 series. Ford 4000 or 5000 would work good but they are spendy. Here because of dealers anytiing supported by AGCO is a no go in my book.

Josh, Dad and I used to plow 50 acres in one day with 2 WD-45 tractors..

Our "Loader tractor" is still here and working (1952 JD "B" with loader)..

Agreed, the AC is GOOD for building Forearms..so is the JD "B" with a good load on the loader, but not that bad..

Ron.

I have a 1953 DC4 Case I use it on 70 acres of hay pull a 469 NH swather rake with a IH 45 hay rake My Baler is a Geil 1600 That makes a 5X6 round bale or I have a 283 small NH baler The DC has around 30 to 45 HP Like everyone else says Use what ya got I am in the process of putting power steering on the DC as you hang a 1000 pound bale on the loader puts a bit on strane on the shoulders LOL Dale

Power steering and 3 point hitch are nice and they can be added to most 1950's tractors like your Allis (for $1500?). Five to fifteen acres won't generate the income to pay for another larger tractor.

Myself, I'd trade the 8N or the WD in on a newer tractor with the features and comfort you want. You probably don't put on enough hours to realize much fuel savings from the extra cost of a diesel, and a gas tractor will start much easier in below freezing temperatures. Oliver 1600, 1650, Case 730, 830 Comfort King version (true 3 point), IH 656, 756, 706 with 756 shifter, Deere 3010, 3020, 4010, 4020 and other 1960's gas tractors will fit your budget and have the hydraulics to handle a loader very well. They are all aproaching fifty years old and it doesn't sound like you will use it heavily, so I'd shop by tractor condition rather than by brand name.

I'd buy a MM m670 there a goofd 70hp tractor, as long as
torque is good you shouldn't have much to worry about.

Save yourself the aggravation and pay a neighbor
who already has the equipment to do it. But if
you're determined to have one, look for an Oliver
1650, gas or diesel, hared to beat that tractor for
a reliable multi-purpose tractor with the
hydraulics to run a loader (well) and creature
comforts you're looking for.

There are a couple of tractors that standout for what you want. An A-C D17 series 4 and A-C 170 are had to beat for hay work with the hi-low power director and hand clutch. And there is the 1550 1555 and 1650 and 1655 Olivers with the 2 and 3 speed hydra-power are really good with a hay baler. These are my choices for older tractors for hay work and general use on the farm and are just good tractors with good reputations to them and in the price range that you stated. I am color blind when it comes to tractors as I have run a lot of different brands over the years but these stand out from the rest as the handiest for general farm work and baling hay. Bandit
