This morning they burned the old part of the Larrabee coop elevator. My photo is from 1/2 mile south of town. Quite a few fire depts involved, with about 8 or 10 hauling water from Cherokee. I'll try to get in closer and snap the result later.

Forty or so years ago, on a zero degree winter day,my wife and I set out to visit her parents who lived about 8 miles west of town. As soon as we were out of town, we could see a wooden grain elevator in a small town a couple of miles from where her parents lived was on fire.

I worked for the local newspaper at the time, and the first thing I did was turn around, go back to the office, and get a camera. We then parked about a couple of blocks away and I got photos of the burn from start to finish.

Turned out I was the only one known to have gotten photos of the incident. For a month after, I was inundated by various entities wanting photos, everyone from insurance companies to trade magazines. But-that was in the days when nobody knew what a cell phone was, much less have one with a camera in it.

I watched a big wooden elevator burn many years ago; it was set on fire by an ex-employee that was fired. Eventually the structure tipped over and fell across the railroad tracks. When the fire burned out, the rails were standing about 4 feet above the roadbed.

It was a main line; the passenger trains had to be diverted to another railroad until they repaired the tracks.

Yes, Iowa. I meant to put that in the original post. Isn't the (over 60 memory) wonderful!

Just this week they announced that the Ohio class nuclear sub Miami was too badly damaged to repair. A year and a half ago it was at the Portsmouth NH Naval shipyard for a twenty year refuel and refit. A worker who was having girlfriend problems wanted to get off early so he started a fire in the sub. It spread, and about a dozen fire departments were called before they got it out. The cost to repair the damage was going to be more than it would be worth. when done. The idiot is already in prison, found guilty of multiple charges.
