Removing a McCormick Deering W4 starter

Will someone please tell me how to remove the starter. I get it almost out but there is not enough room to get it all the way out. I even broke off an ear while trying. Is there a certain way it has to come out?
I"ve been working on tractors for over 40 years but have never worked on a W4.

The PTO is in the back of the tractor and the starter is in the middle Left side of the tractor.
Not sure what you mean.

There are I belive 4 or 6 bolts on the cover under the starter. You wont be able to take all of them out all the way, but the ones towards the front will come all the way out. Once you have those out, and the others as far as you can get them, take a prybar and lift the front of the cover under the starter. Itll come out.

You have to remove the Belt pulley drive housing from the top of the transmission to get enough room for the starter to come out.

That thing the back of the starter is hitting is the belt pulley housing. Not the pto on the back. That needs to move out of the way. Have fun with that.

I would take it apart where it is to allow just enough "bend in the starter length to get it out. I just might be easier than pulling the housing. Just thinking outside the box. Jim

it will not come out till the belt pulley assembly is removed, not a big deal.in other words keep removing stuff till it comes out, straight forward.
it is a heck of a lot harder to change a battery hidden in the right fender in a 2001 dodge 300 car,

The Belt pulley housing has to come straight up. There is no "bend" in there to allow the starter to come out.

That works too!(Just to get it off. I suppose you could put it back on that way too) The first time my starter on mine went out, I knew it was the starter so I just took it apart right there where it was at. Take out the bolts, slide the housing off and there is enough room to get it off. But my method and your method obviously wont work, so the belt pulley has to come out. I mean, its not like I don't own one, and know little tricks to get the starter off without puling the bely pulley assembly.

From the picture it is readily apparent that all you need is a longer/big enough bar, no dissassembly needed. Of course you may want the new one to go in in one piece.

Well I finally figured out you guys are talking about taking the starter apart and taking the field housing off and then pulling the rest out???? or did you mean just taking the bolts out of the starter housing and leaving it "kind" of together????

Take the belt pulley assembly off. Give it to someone who wants it and make plate to take it's place. After struggling with those dam pulley drives, that no one ever uses, I have plates on the three tractors I own and the pulley drives lay in a corner of a building.

I want to thank everyone, Its out, got it out in 15 minutes. Good advice given. thanks
I will post a new question about the cam shaft.
