Hi, we were there 5 years ago. Very impressive engineering.
It was a cloudy day and photos were not great.

If that's what it does, it seems like an awful lot of power and risk compared to a lock and letting gravity do the work. Must be more to it than that.
 
Since the canal boats are floating in the water the weight on both ends is always equal. No matter what the boat weighs it always displaces it weight in water. As long as the water levels are equal in both ends the weights will also be equal. Because it always remains balanced it takes very little power to operate.

Huh. Well, now that I think about it, it makes sense. I stand corrected!
