Fence building rates

Howdy. I don't build fence (typically) for Bid, or for other people. We build our own fence at the farm as needed. Never really watched how long it takes, just did it till its done....

Now, I have a friend (I know....bad idea) who needs some fence built and some repaired. Trying to decide a fair rate to charge him. He is doing some work on a AR15 rifle for me, partial trade for my services.....

What is the "going rate" per hour for fence work? I am a Electrical Contractor by trade....and I don't think those rates will transfer very well....LOL. Thanks ahead.

get some bids on the fence and sub it out. then go back to making 4 times as much as an electrical contractor. unless you just get really bored on evenings and weekends.

I just enclosed 3.5 acres with high tensile woven wire "horse" fence. 1-20' double gate and 1-10' gate. The corners all had double H braces. All treated fence posts. Single strand of barb wire on top. Cost right at $10,000.00. About $5.50 per foot turn keyed. Crew used a skid steer with hydraulic post hole digger and had it done in 4 days. Drilled the holes same size as posts then pressed them into the ground. Line posts 36" deep and corners 48" and cemented in. They use an electric staple gun. I didn't know there was such a thing.

Far better and faster fence than I have ever built.

in this area labor to install fence is if the material cost $1000.00 labor is $1000.00 , what ever the material cost that is what the labor cost is also.

NRCS gave us close to $2 a foot about ten years ago to put in HT crossfencing, and we did the work. My material cost was about $.50/ft. for what it's worth.....

Sparky, While I was at the Barber shop Saturday am, I got to visit with one of our local Fence builders. These guys build cattle and Deer-proof fences 52 weeks a year, Not the "In Town" build privacy fences and get a cattle fence one or twice a year, because they built a privacy fence for the new owner of 10 acres! Town fence builders will quote about $5.00/ft.
This Guy, New build, new materials, Clean ground $3.00/ft + -. Removal of old and dozing of ROW, Extra!
Patch work... so much/hr....time is money depend on how big the patch work $15.00 to $20.00/hr!
Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

I build and general contract both on fence. For general contracting I usually go with 33% markup if I'm carrying the float, 22% if I'm not. For building it, about 2.00 a foot plus materials, usually try to make around 20% on the materials. Plus rock drilling, plus dozer work.

I dont either but I just put in a double electric with a gate for a guy.. Buddy and I worked from 10-4 and made about 180.00 each.. FYI He bought the stuff and had on sight..
