generator light stays on all the time

Put new 6 volt battery, and new selenoid on Ford 4000 tractor that has gas engine. When I put battery cables on, the red generator light comes on and stays on, even with the key off. Never had this happen before. It wasn"t doing this before I had to replace battery and selenoid. It"s acting like it"s by passing the key switch. Anyone got any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

Since you said 6 volt I am going to assume we are talking about a 4000 with a 4 cylinder engine.

Will the engine crank when you push the start button on top the trans and the key in off position?

If so it may be your key switch by passing.
If not I would wonder if you installed the correct solenoid and the new wrong one is back feeding power into the key switch.

Yes it is a 6 volt system. It will completely start and run with the key in the off position.

Looking at the wiring diagram I see that the solenoid start terminal is fed electricity internally from the battery post, and the start button grounds it. That would sure do as I indicated in my other response. Jim

I replaced the wires on selenoid like they came off the old one. I've got a wiring diagram, and it's wired correctly.

I understand, some solenoids have the terminals reversed. Pull off both small wires from the solenoid and see if it lets the light go out. If it does, use a volt meter on the terminals to see which one is sending 12v. That one attaches to the starter button. If it does not, maybe the solenoid is feeding electricity to the ignition all the time (bad) Jim

The solenoid start terminal is NOT fed electricity internally from the battery post on this model if he has the correct solenoid.

One small solenoid terminal is fed electricity from the key switch; the power runs threw windings in the solenoid to the second small terminal that is hooked to the start button.
Pushing the start button grounds the electricity causing the solenoid to work.

Switching the two small wires does nothing but reverse the flow threw the solenoid windings.

Turns out that the parts store gave me the wrong selenoid. Thanks for all the help.
