had some ruf weather around 9 lastnite ,, not too muchrain ,, everything could still be coaxed into burnin followed by lots of wind ,, as I go to bed I always look out the upstairs window , about midnite ,durned if the big ol poplar tree that got struck by lite;nin 5 yrs ago was on fire ,, must a got hit again ????,, tried putting it out with bukets of pond water at 1st ,, then realized the fire had too much head start , and called out the volunteers, told what I had ,, 2 guys and a brush truk come out,,, joey decided to cut the tree down ,, this thing is over 3ft thru ,, he dropped the tree ,, fire everywhere ,, we hosed it all down , and now ALL IS WELL , took 2 hours out of me and one hour away from the fire dept

Do you know how many members there are total on the department? It is always tough to get guys to come out of bed, unless it is a house fire.

Had a neighbor that lost his dairy barn to lighting. There was a thunder storm and he woke up in the night and seen a glow on his bedroom wall. Looked out the window and his barn was already about gone.

I think we have about 45 guys on the volunteer department. All you have to do is say you saw smoke, and 4 trucks will be there in a hurry. We have some of the greatest guys in the world, and they have fought some of the nastiest ones in the country.
Here I have 3 skid units, but with it still dropping down below freezing, I haven't filled any of them yet.

we had numerous brush fires on Wednesday--50 mph gusts

We always had trouble getting guys during the day. They could not leave work. A fire during the day usually saw me and one or two guys plus the chief show up. They finally put on a couple of full timers but then those guys took the trucks and left before volunteers got there and handled 95% of the calls before we could get on scene. So then volunteers got discouraged and left. I moved away. Now they are all full time I think and the cost must be huge. Community did not change that much.

(quoted from post at 08:06:02 03/28/14) We always had trouble getting guys during the day. They could not leave work. A fire during the day usually saw me and one or two guys plus the chief show up. It happened very differently here. We had a half dozen guys that were around a lot during the day. it was decided to hire a full timer to help with day time, but volunteers were still doing most of it. Then one deputy quit because he couldn't get along with the full timer, and then the chief got sick and had to get done, and the other deputy didn't want it so they gave the chief's job to the full time kid. He is very prideful and insecure and he didn't want any of the older guys around and did everything he could to make it unpleasant for us. He finally discharged myself and another guy, then four others left soon after. Now it is mostly young single guys and very few respond from 6:00 PM friday until 6:00 AM Monday. Now it is two full timers and usually less than six responding.
