Tractor Driving Music

When I got old enough to drive tractors, in the late 60s and early
70s, seems like Buck Owens was on the radio a lot. AM radio of
course. How about other fond memories?

I remember a Joan Jett song that was really catchy, I was chasing with the cart. Spent a lot of time changing stations looking for that one! Must have been around 1982!

Same time period for me. It was KXRB country out of Sioux Falls during the day on the tractor. Then we got a few local stations that played a little of everything. It was KOMA rock and roll (thanks to my sisters) out of Oklahoma City as soon as the sun went down milking cows....

I still listen to both.

I have always been a fan of Rock and Roll myself.

AC/DC
Nickle Back
ZZ Top
Aerosmith

Also like Al Green, and a LOT of country....

I always listen to 98.9 KKZX, our local Classic Rock station! Bryce

The definition of classic rock is when the band all play the same song at the same time.

I would drive an 8N Ford and an Allis Chambers WD45. Neither had a radio, but I remember a man named Mr. Ficket constantly "Sharing" stories of people who died from flipping a tractor. He was missing 2 fingers from working on a combine. He was the shop and farm instructor at the far right wing acedemy I attended for high school. He was also suffering from a smashed disk from being thrown of a piece of heavy equipment. I always wondered if he even knew anyone who paid attention to what they was doing when they were around machines?

Yep, here in E SD listened to a lot of Rock and Roll on 1520 KOMA out of OKC, OK. Started farmin in 68 with a 930 Western Case. First thing I bought for the tractor was a Automatic radio. Worked in town and half the nite on the farm.

In 1958 or '59 I spent the summer de-tassleing corn and rode from my hometown to the next town with the ag teacher to go to work every morning at 5. He would pick me and a couple others up at the city hall steps about 4:40 am. He had a new '58 impala with the 348 and a radio. Johnny Cash had a hit on the top 40 called 'Peggy Too' so they played it alot. Seems like we listened to it every morning on our ride to work - 2-lane blacktop, cool morning sunshine and field after field of maturing corn flying by as the Impala made tracks, eastbound and down - doesn't get any better than that for me! :D

I like Glenn Miller & the Big Band Era of the 1920's & 30's .

Antique tractors & antique music - Kinda seem to go together.

Doc :>)

Oh the rememberies that you just brought back! I remember waking in the morning during the fifties. hearing Eddy Arnold on the radio. Lotta "Hanks" Hank Williams, Hank Snow, Hank Thompson, Kitty Wells, etc, etc. Then We discovered "Rock and Roll". When I got old enough to drive, my friends and I would listen to R&R while crusin' town, but when I was alone in the car, I would often tune the radio to country. If it was Saturday night, I would listen to the Grand Old Opry. Never had a radio on a tractor, couldn't have heard it over the noise of the engine anyway.

I dunno if he'd want me dropping names, but a bass player friend of mine has a song coming out soon that truly captures the essence of being a farmer. I think the name of the song is "Behind the Plow" but wouldn't swear to it. He's sung it a few times at our local jam sessions. When the CD is released, I'll post a link, but it might be weeks in the future.

In the meantime, here's a little Merle Haggard to tide you over-though my friend's song also captures the optimism of farming.
Haggard

Wore out a few CCR tapes in the 2-105. Not allowed to listen to radio or wear ear plugs, Grandad said might not hear the machine.

I was finishing up spreading manure one mid December afternoon. It was dark out, and I was listening to Christmas songs on the radio, and then it started to snow. That is memorable.

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils and their song Chicken Train. Enjoyed listening to these guys while I was in high school. Have been going to their concerts lately.
Farmers Blues was sung at a good friends funeral about a month ago. Here it is, Merle Haggard and Mary Stuart.
Farmers Blues

Oh ya,AM fender mount radio,AM radio in the milk truck. Connie Smith was at the top of her game. Conway and Loretta,Sonny James,Porter,Sammy Smith,George and Tammy. Those were the golden years of country music for me. Hasn't been the same since.

I don't think we had a tractor or a truck that had an FM radio in it so I spent many hours listening AM... KFGO out of Fargo, that was back when you could actually turn on the radio and listen to music or maybe a baseball game. Now all they do is talk politics and other crap no one cares to listen to.

Beach Boys and Jan & Dean and all the hot rod songs of the '60,s. 409 , Hey Little Cobra , Shut Down , Little Deuce Coupe , Little Ole Lady From Pasadena etc. Ronny and the Daytona,s "Little GTO" , The Tigers "Gee TO Tiger". Pretty hard for anybody to not sing "She's Real Fine My 409" for hours after last hearing it.

The only tractor we had that had a radio, my uncle ran most all the time.

Had an 87 2.2L 5 spd Dakota in high school. Handled about like a car with that light engine up front. Pulled the radio out of a truck we parted out and stuck in it, it would even stop FF at the start of the next song and auto-reverse! That radio just about wore out the copy of Rush's "Moving Pictures" from the tape collection my aunt gave me for Christmas when she realized I liked older rock bands.

Now I skip around the radio, got Sirius so I could listen to some comedy (had it 4-5 years ago, they are still playing the same stuff, danggit!) and NASCAR. When I get to feeling like being really brain dead I'll bring up the local pop station or Rush Limbaugh.

One of these things, is not like the others..........
You know how they got the name nickelback? That's the change you get if you buy one of their records and pay using a dime......

Zepplin, Howlin Wolf, BB King, Aretha Frankiln, Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins, Roy Orbison, and more oldies but goodies. Don't forget Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress by thr Hollies and Leave Your Hat On by Joe Cocker!!

NO rap crap!
