feed handling??

well my hog biusness is growing . I have been buying feed from the local mill bagged in 50ish lb sacks. now im going to be buying feed from a friend but i will get it in 1000 lbs bulk bags. I have a bulk bin on the way. my question is how can i fill it. can i use a 6in grain auger . i know the feed mill has a truck with a big auger on it. but its way way cheaper to buy from my friend but i have to figure out how to handle it. any suggestions.

A grain auger will work fine for a hog ration. The only time it will not work well is with real bulky stuff like ground hay but I don't see you feeding hay to hogs anytime soon. LOLJim

Talk to the grain company. They may decide that since you are growing that you are worth better pricing so they will come and auger it in for you.

What fixerupper said- 6 inch auger will handle that mix just fine. How do you empty the bulk bags? I"d suggest getting it in a hyd dump wagon, empty right into your auger.

Lift the bags over the hopper with the front end loader, by the lift loops in the bag.

I'm in negotiations to acquire a "Grain-O-vator" for my hog operation. The feed store charges an extra 38 cents per bag, and then I only get a 1/2 ton at a time. I figure with the buggy, I can do 6 trips in one and save $45.60 on bags for each trip.

I second the Grain-O-Vator, then you wouldn't even need to bag it. Take the cart to the mill and drop it off, have them call you when its full. Most COOPS will work with you like that.

I third the Grain-O-Vator idea. Dad bought one in 1956. I rode with him many times in the 1949 International KB1 pickup pulling the Grain-O-vator to town to get feed. The model 10 holds 2 ton. You will want a tight tarp or lid of some sort because it blows in the wind like crazy. Jim

I have a John Deere 68 grain cart that holds 125 bu. and think it would work great for what you need.We paid $750 for it several years ago and if you keep it inside it should never go down in value. You cold also build a hopper over your auger that you could lift the bulk bag into then dump or cut the bag.
