Every morning I drive a few miles down the road to the local BTO to pick up TMR for my son. While I was in the tractor loading up, the local milk co-op manager was on the radio and he stated that foriegn milk product sales contributed about 78 cents per hundred to the price of milk. I know there are other factors involed, but my first thought was: Yeah, right! If China decides to quit buying milk powder all of a sudden, the price would go down more like 7 to 8 dollars, not 78 cents!

I sure hope the producer is getting the high price for the milk and not some middle man that does nothing for it, it has really went up here in the past week or so

Case Nutty,

Right now the price is pretty decent as dairy farming goes. Just like all forms of farming, it won't last. About two years ago it was under cost of production. Local feller who rents land from me at the time was milking around 200 and told me he was losing $3,000 per month. The largest of the BTO's in the area at that time told me he was losing well over $3,000 per day.

Our prices have improved over the last several months, but at $23.04 per hundredweight on my last check, we're still under $2/gallon...a far cry from what I see at the store.

If they are losing so much money, why are they expanding and spending so much money on improvements. Looks like they would be cutting back.

I know dad's able to make progress paying off a bunch of bills right now. I hope it can last long enough to get them out of the hole. The cows are milking better than they have all of the last year right now.

None of them were expanding at the time. Everyone was just hunkering down hoping their equity would carry them through.

As said below "Total mixed ration". All the feed is mixed together. Corn silage, haylage, ground corn, various protien supplemnets and minerals. This particular ration has a bit of straw mixed in to for dry fiber to maintain butterfat content of the milk and prevent twisted stomachs. The cows will eat on average about 100 pounds per day. The seller was using cotton seed for fiber, but he now raises his own oats and sells the grain and uses the straw in the ration for the dry fiber. Cheaper than buying the cotton seed and actually seems to be more effective.

Once upon a time, there were 2 brothers. They bought a 1-ton stake body truck. They drove about 150 miles and bought a truck load of watermelons at 50 cents a pound. They then went back home and sold the watermelons at a roadside stand for 50 cents a pound. One day, the older brother says, "We ain't making no money doing this." The younger brother thinks for a minute, then says, "Maybe we need a bigger truck."

Around here we have a lot of Reed Canary Grass, gets real tough and stalky when it gets mature. Many people have remarked on the fact that while we use it for bedding, the cows will often leave the TMR and nice 2nd cut hay and start chewing on that woody garbage. A sure sign they want fiber according to the old timers.

Oats or Speltz is good feed and the straw has some value beyond just fiber.
